How do I link family members?

on my software when you go to add a spouse there is a button called search for existing spouse, click that and up comes a list of everyone already on your tree, just click on the name required. theres lots of brothers and sisters and aunts and nephews by marriage and goodness knows what on my tree. a real muddle. |

A few generations back, I have brothers and sisters marrying into the same family. I've already added the partners by inputting the maternal line so how do I avoid duplication? |
