Have recently discovered my father's birthmother was a barmaid in a hotel, and wondered if I would be able to get a better guess at her age by finding out how old you would have had to have been in the late 1930's to work in a bar at a hotel? Can anyone tell me where I could find out the answer or is there anyone on GC who can tell me because they were/were not of the drinking age at the time? Michele in Haslemere |

Hi Have you seen this There are also several pamphlets on the employment of barmaids, published by the Barmaids' Political Defence League and the National British Women's Temperance Association, which published "Facts about barmaids" in 1907, (HD6/82), M(PAMPHLETS 188). The National British Women's Total Abstinence Union issued "Barmaids: facts regarding womens' employment in drinking bars", 1930, (HD6/359), M(PAMPHLETS 192).
