I'm thinking of buying a copy of the 1851 Census for Hampshire on CD but as it's fairly expensive thing to to do I want to check I understand the methods of look up. I understand that unlike the Censuses that are on-line you can only search by place or street name - not surname. So I sent off for a surname index from those nice people at the IOW FHS and have a booklet of surnames that says things like 'Fry 53.20' so am I right in thinking that I get volume 53 and look up Northwood (20)? That this Fry is the head of a household so I can't look for relatives who were lodgers or in-service? It may seem glaringly obvious but I wnat to amke sure I do it right. Thanks |
