I have just looked up a death on FreeBMD and the result showed:- Webster James 70 Blackburn 8e 370. I am a transcriber for FreeBMD but have never done any deaths so far. Can someone please tell me what the 70 is for - was that his age when he died or what? This number isn't normally there on the births. |

This is probably his age at time of death. Find the entry again, scroll back to the top of the list and read the headings. That will help you. Jan. |

From experience of certificates received, the age at death. Thye have only started doing this recently. I've a feeling there is a note about this somewhere in the blurb. It is sad when you read names and there is a '0' in the deaths section, and when you find a birth and a death registered in the same quarter too. Hazel |

Hi Andrea, It is the age at death, as given by the informant. So it will only be as reliable as the person who gave the information. Have to be a bit flexible as with most other things genealogical!! Debbie |

Hi there, I am not absolutely certain but I think that the age of death did not appear on the death certificates until 1866. Unless you have a very unusual name, then I think the burial records are your best option before this date. Mary |
