Actually I found my Scottish side the easiest to research so far out of all them. Thats partly because the parish register transcripts for the island they were from are free to view online, but I only got to that stage through the Scotlandspeople site. When you're a poor student you have to save up a lot to buy 3/4 certs to get you moving again on your English lines. It was easier to find the £6 and get at least 2/3 certs from Scotlandspeople site from just that £6!

I have used scotlands people almost exclusively for the past two years - I'm now at the stage where I need to look at microfiche and am lucky I live in Edinburgh & can do so easily. Scotlands people is a great site - £6 is a tiny amount of money to pay to access the vast quantity of infomation 30 credits can give you. Scottish certificates also give you more information than English or Welsh so the first £6 you spend could easily let you find & view a couple of certificates and a few census results - 1881 costs 1 credit to view. It costs 1 credit to view each page of search results and 5 credits to view 1891, 1901 census, birth, death & marriage certificates. It's very easy! K.

thanks linda i've already tried there and i pull up plenty of matches for dumfries thing is i'm looking for people born around the turn of the century, its gettin to be a pain in the ****. why does scottish genealogy have to be so much more difficult? its like us i suppose :) good luck to all

Hi Lianne You could try Scottishdocuments.com It is a list of bequeathments/wills. I have found a couple of relatives. There is no charge to look up names, you only pay if the will is available and you request a copy. You never know what you may find, worth a shot! Good Luck Lynda

Hi Lianne, I'm afraid that you won't find a free site for the 1901 for Scotland. But for only £6 you can view the census and then find his birth, marriage and death certificates for only £1 each. It's a bargain!! Give it a go...... Regards Margaret

can anyone tell me where i can search the 1901 census for scotland? i'm trying to find my g grandfather but i only know his name and i'm not sure where he lived in scotland(or if it was scotland but that's where i'm starting) i only want to figure out his dob from the census but can't get access to the results (for free) even summarised, like youcan for england and wales any suggestions?

Hi All, www.scotlandpeople.gov.uk is the site to find your Scottish site BMD's and 1881, 1891 and 1901 Censues. It also has some details from OPR's. The older censuses are going to be on line by Spring time - which is hopefully around the corner! You need to register with £6 which gives you 48 hours and 30 credits. You can do as much seaching as you like within your 48 hours as long as you still have credits available. I always try and leave 1 credit so that you can still use the search facility while you still have some time left within your 48 hours. If you time runs out and you still have credits left they do stay there until you pay your next £6. Happy searching. Regards Margaret

Has anyone mentioned Scotlandspeople.gov? Well worth the £6 recommended by someone else on this site but you can search for free once registering , and don't pay to view until you find the correct entry. I managed to aquire 1891 and 1881 census, 2 birth entries and a marriage with all dates place and witnesses. Original entry on one document was illegible and they have agreed to e-mail it direct. There are also accessible church records. If only we had the same easy access to English records! Marion

zoe that is more than i ever would have asked and is greatly appreciated. i would do the same for anyone given the chance. anyway my papas name was thomas sloan(e) dale dob 25/4/25 married annie rice (dob 9/6/28) on the 19/7/46. he was born in dumfries as far as i know unfortunately although my nana knows she has her cert, she is not sure where it is so i can't tell you what is on it. even just his mother's/ father's names would give me a start. please excuse any information that's missing - i'm a newbie and don't have many places to turn for info anyway many thanks lianne

Lianne, if you're still stuck I'm going to the History and Glasgow room fairly soon. I would imagine they hold the registers for the whole of Scotland (seeing as they hold the English and wWelsh ones) If you can supply me with your grandfathers name, the info from the marriage cert and even a vague idea of dates (for his birth and marriage) I can see what I can find for you Zoe

hi zoe my grandfather had 10 brothers and sisters all born in dumfries 10 years either side of 1925, as far as i know. unfortunately as he is dead i have no idea of their dobs or of his parents names, and my nana does not know them. because of this i am completely stuck

could anyone recommend sites where i can search/view scottish records? have browsed through the links on this site and the only ones that are free are for england and wales only. the scottish ones you have to pay for, but i don't have specific enough information to do this. any help would be welcome
