RECOMMENDED SPYWARE PREVENTION PROGRAM

ProfilePosted byOptionsPost Date

Judy

Judy Report 19 Mar 2004 23:55

SpywareBlaster is one of the recommended programs that our techs have been recommending to clients....it prevents spyware from being installed on your PC....opposed to ADAWARE which removes it once it's been placed on your PC. I think someone had posted a query on this program a few days ago....which is why I asked the techs. Glad I did! I've installed the program and will keep Adaware and will run it to see if SPYWAREBLASTER is doing it's job. You can get the program at: http://www(.)javacoolsoftware(.)com/spywareblaster.html Remember to remove the ( ) from the address.

Hi Sally.....SpywareBlaster, after it's been downloaded and installed, runs in the background of your computer.....meaning, it's on all the time.....you don't have to run it manually like you do Adaware. SpywareBlaster, does though, have an UPDATE feature that you would update definitions once a week or so. As for Adaware, when the red bug comes up flashing: 1. Click on the NEXT button. 2. You're now looking at the search results of what Adaware has found on your computer. Place your mouse over anyone one of the search result lines and RIGHT click. 3. A box appears.....click on SELECT ALL OBJECTS. You'll now note that that is a check mark in front of each spyware item found. 4. Click on QUARANTINE. A box will appear asking you to to name the file....use today's date as the name and click OK. A blue bar code will flash across the screen. 5. Click on NEXT and then click on REMOVE.....the items should then be put in quarantine. Presently, I have both Adaware and SpywareBlaster on my computer. If SpywareBlaster does what it's supposed to, which is to block spyware from ever reaching your PC, then Adaware, hopefully, won't be needed....as Adaware removes spyware that makes its way onto your PC. I'll run Adaware for a while to make sure that there is no spyware. Hope that helps. Judy :)

Hi Judy, Have just downloaded SpywareBlaster and need to know whether all the unchecked items highlighted in Red on the main list need to be selected and have protection set against them, or do I need them to be left unprotected? Many thanks for all your wonderful tips and for making them idiot-proof! I have copied them all!! Best wishes, Kathy

Can anyone tell me which download I click on, is it 1.2.3 or 4 or doesn`t it matter.

Unknown Report 21 Mar 2004 16:00

Pat, I don't think it matters - I clicked on 1 and it was fine! Kathy

Judy Report 21 Mar 2004 18:28

Kathy.....all the results should be checked....in small print, right under the results of what you're to be protected against, there is a SELECT ALL choice.....click on it and it will place a check mark in front of everything. As for which to download at the site, 1, 2, 3, etc....it doesn't matter.....the choices are just different sites that host the same download. Judy :)

After downloading the program, use the update facility to get another few hundred definitions to block (then activate them). I've still got one or two getting through, but I think it may be fewer now. I always seem to have the same two - one is called RedSherrif.

Judy Report 23 Mar 2004 07:12

Malcom.....Yes, I have noted I am still getting "tracking cookies" but no programs have been downloaded. There's a big difference between the two. I am going to ask the techs when they come in, in the morning if it should be blocking both cookies and programs or just the programs....perhaps it's a setting that needs to be changed in the program if it should be blocking both. The programs (those blasted .exe files) are what concern me and what causes all the problems so if it's just the programs it keeps off the PC I can live with that. Judy

Hi Judy, When you run this Spywareblaster programme, does it stop all the awful e-mails which seem to be about these days?! Margaret

Judy

Judy Report 6 Apr 2004 04:54

Margaret: No, SpywareBlaster protects your PC from spyware programs that download and install themselves without your knowledge and cause those awful pop-ups. Some of the tool bars that are so popular amongst PC users also puts these programs on your PC as well as downloads from the internet. When spyware is left to accumulate on your PC, besides the annoying pop-ups, they can cause a lot of problems and in some cases shut down your PC causing an avoidable trip to the repair shop. SpywareBlaster protects your PC from those programs ever reaching your harddrive where as Adaware finds and removes spyware cookies and other things once they are on your PC Judy

Judy Have now installed this on my computer too, and used adaware to get rid of what I already had, so cross fingers, all should be ok from now on. I use Webroots Window Washer to get rid of cookies, what do you think of this program???? I have never heared it mentioned on here. Thanks for all your help Judy Lisa

thanks for the tips Judy I have download adaware and spyblaster but still get pop-ups

Judy

Judy Report 21 Apr 2004 22:22

Christine.....try emptying cookies and temporary internet files as well. If you're still getting pop-ups I would think that you have a program on your computer that is generating more after you get rid of what is already on your computer. Adaware will remove adware related cookies and SpywareBlaster prevents programs from downloading themselves without your knowledge....but programs that are already installed will have to be uninstalled manually. Some of these buggers can be difficult to delete....they are programmed to be! When you run Adaware again, before you delete or quarantine the results, see if in the search results of what it found, if there are any programs that end in .exe. (EXE files are programs.) If so, copy down the file path and I can advise you from there on how to get rid of it. Judy
