Clare, I would keep trying for a bit longer Callingwood is not a very common name in Ireland. It might be well worth your while persuing. There is a Callingwood Company listed in Galway on Yahoo Ireland search. None in the Dublin phone book though. LOL, might be a lot more common on the West side of Ireland. As for your relatives in Staffs hope they are not as difficult as my lot LOL. Good Luck Pat x

Thanks to everyone. All I know about my grandfather x so many is that he was a Thomas Callingwood born around 1799 in Gallaway Ireland. Think I'll give hima miss for a while and concentrate on the ohters from Staffs instead. Thanks agian for your help. Clare.xxx

Looking at the area covered by the "Gallaway to Bantry" map, it looks like it must be another name for Galway.

Clare, I have just checked on the net for "Gallaway Ireland" and there are many entries from the 1770's and 1800's on census that state County Gallaway, Ireland as birth place the only thing I can suggest to you it may be the old way of spelling Galway. All I can do for you. Good Luck Pat x

Clare, If you read that again it says Galloway to BANTRY which is South West Of Cork, Ireland. I think that Gallaway is the one mentioned thats in Scotland. The surname Gallaway is common in Ireland, maybe Irish. There was a few famous Lord mayors of Cork called Gallaway. Another thing to remember Gallaway is the Spanish version of GALWAY. Sorry its all so confusing I reckon the mistake is on the Census forms and it is Galway. Pat x

Now I know that I'm losing it !! A Google search comes up with a marine navigation map from "Gallaway to Bantry South West Ireland" - ANY IDEAS !!! It must be a place if there's a sea chart with the same name. Or could Gallaway be the old spelling for somewhere else ???? Clare.xxx

Hi Claire I just put galway in msn search and a travel site came up with loads of info about the place its 1.2.travel.com hope this helps its only a idea . Theresa

The census definetely says Gallaway Ireland. I did a blind search on Ancestry and there was a few census returns with the same spelling but that doesn't mean much I guess. Someone suggested that it was in the south west of County Cork and was on the coast. Not really a village but a hamlet. I can't find it anywhere though. Aaaargh!!!! Clare.xx

Clare, Definetly a mistake THERE IS NO GALLAWAY IN IRELAND. Its like others say its either SCOTLAND or a big mistake with COUNTY GALWAY. Pat x

HI Pat, It's not Galway but Gallaway, Co, Ireland. At first I thought it was a misspelling of Galway but it's spelt the same on 3 censuses. Clare.xx

Clare Its GALWAY its a small City of its own, in County Galway West Of Ireland. Is there anywhere else mentioned or just GALWAY? If it is just that name more than likely they came from the City instead of Country County Galway. Pat x
