found Robert in 1881, but unfortunately he's not at home. He's spelt Clemet and he's a farm servant, head of household is Thomas Harrison

does anyone know if Appleton le Street is the same place as Appleton Le Moors, York, England ?? I found a Robert Clemmitt who was 16 in 1881 but he was born Appleton Le Moors. I noticed that Appleton le Street is covered by Malton.

Unfortunately I don't know any siblings of Robert because I can't find hime before 1891. In 1891 he was married to Alice Grainger & had his first child, & was living in Hunslet. In 1901 he forgot how to spell his name & was Roberts W Clements. Luckily my grandfather was named Clifford and not some common name or would would not have found him.

Does Robert have any siblings that you can cross check the mothers maiden name? Do all the John & Mary marriages you have found have the same maiden name for Mary? Do you know the month in 1864 that Robert was born, if so 1837 online would give you a maiden name without too much searching. Mel in Oz :-)

I just searched the 1881 census on census on Ancestry & there are no Clemmitts born in Huttons Ambo. Looks like this branch of the tree went in the space ship with the rest of my family!

To be certain, I think you really need the birth certificate.

This is John & Mary in 1891, so they would have been too old to have kids. John Clemmitt - B Huttons Ambo Aged 69 Railway plate layer Wife - Mary aged 66 B Youlthorpe

hi I don't have access to the 1871 census, but Robert would have been about 6 I guess. And I haven't found him on 1881 either. I am not too good at this am I. Maybe I was confused looking for a John & Mary. I should start fron scratch maybe. Oh dear. Both Robert William & John were born in Huttons Ambo, but on the BMD is says MAlton. I know it is North Riding of Yorkshire.

Hi Tracey, If John and Mary had children together the birth cert of one of those children will give her maiden name. Gwynne

I didn't think I needed to buy Robert William Clemmitt's birth cert because I thought I knew his parents were John & MAry, & I knew where he was born. Now that it seems has mother isn't MAry I guess I will need to buy it. It still won't solve the mystery of which Mary John married though.

My g Grandfather Robert Clemmitt was born in Malton in 1864. I know his father was John. I have John married to MAry in 1891 census living in Huttons Ambo. I asssumed Robert's mother was MAry, but since there seems to me no John & Mary Clemmit's before 1891, I am now thinking he was remarried. SO. I found a John Clemmitt marrying a MAry in Northallerton in 1883. I also found a John marrying a Mary in Stockton in 1888. Now I checked & both these places are in North Riding. How do I find out which is My John? Thanks Karen
