First boy after fathers father 2nd boy after mothers father 3rd boy after father 1st girl after mothers mother 2nd girl after fathers mother 3rd girl after mother I found this site a few years ago but forgot to save it to my fav. or to copy it so I can't remember any more, I know its then goes to brothers etc but can't remember the order. If anyone else finds this site could they let me know please as it is helpful. Irene

Pat it does sound confusing! Its quite possible that the children bearing the same first name was known by their second name.

wendy I have never heard that one before, two sons same name both survive???? I have two families (brothers) they have 5-6 children each both chose similar names the children are similar age, they annoy me as I have to follow two Samuel's born the same year (checked 1837 but on census therir age is two years apart) they marry within the same time frame and die around the same time, I know one is right the other is wrong, it baffles me, I followed the line through birth certs but on census I cannot tell them apart for the 1901 because both are boarders, different places same profession (glass blowers). are well here we go toss a coin. One of the banes of my life has been a family of SHIPLEY. They had a son Joseph b. 1846, then another son called Joseph b. 1858. I assumed the first had died---no---they both survived. The first son had a middle name of Matthew. The second Joseph was bap plain Joseph but later adopted his mother's maiden name as a middle name! VERY confusing! Try finding them on later censuses! Yes it was very common for people to do this. If one child died, it was quite usual to call another child with the same name. I seem to suffer from too many Thomases and Williams.

Heidi I think every family had similar names I have 2 brothers they both had of course loads of children the only way I know where I am is the fathers are Thomas and Charles OK until the boys leave home and work somewhere else as boarders??? which one is the right one then the nightmare starts 1901 I have two Samuels I know they are cousins but they are both boarding in different places and I cannot tell which one is which as the neither age is correct, one is a year younger than mine one is a year older???? My other side was a lot more considerate two brothers one chooses bibical names the other does not, now thats what I call considerate LOL> Pat x

Believe it or not human error is the cause of most of these. One entry I saw had a child born after mother died!

thank you all xxxx specially shaz x cant ya help me with the other question??......could the 1871 census possibly get birthdate 3 yrs out compared to the other census's and perhaps the wrong birthplace altho same county and not far apart xxx

Definitely - some families may have called a child say Richard or Jane who die and another is also called that name. I have noticed in my family cousins bearing the same name and including spelling variations eg Joan or Joane

wow....i think i have it then....maybe crashing the brick wall(only to make another LOL) Just now need to know if possible the 1871 could have the dates and exact birthplace wrong....altho the county is the same and the towns are no9t far apart....

and what about the birht differences....places of brith same county slightly different area in census....and age 2 yrs out....is that possible?

Heidi It was really common for brothers to give their children the same names, especially as there was a traditional naming pattern for naming children. Shaz :-)

Hi.....this is confusing....following a lead for my brick wall...i think i have it as the mother has an unusual name Rosamond.... just wondered if was possible in around 1871 ish that brothers would call their children the same name?.....or would the son call 2 children ( 12 years apart) the same name but one wiht a middle name? Hope this makes snese xx
