Well this is interesting! My great grandma was known as Polly but her name was Hannah Mary. I think I better start looking at Mary Hannah now! Debby

Hi Valerie, I had a gt gt aunt who was named Mary but it then changed to Polly. I have her birth as Mary A and her mariage as Polly,also coincides with cencus results I have for her. Hope this helps you. Happy Hunting Angie.

My G Grandmother was called Polly...i always thought that was her real name!! However on the 1901 Census it lists her as Mary. Just had a thought i have been unable to find her Birth Cert so far..maybe her real name was Mary Ann? on her marriage cert it lists her name as being Polly!

I am pretty sure that a genealogist on tv the other night said it was Mary Anne - dont know why though

I also had an aunt who was called Polly by everyone, it was only recently when reading herr memorial card that I found out her name was Mary Ann Elizabeth, I wonder how they came to be called Polly. Grace R

Gt. Grandmother, Mary, was known as Polly. I think it probably depends on the date you are looking at. Were there any Paulines in the mid 1800's?
