Hi Susie. My friend was a nurse and used to work in Hastings. I'm sure I remember her saying something about Mary Magdalene. I've just rang her but not in. Will find out what I can and email you direct, it might take awhile. Mary

Susie, I've done a bit of googling (supposed to be working from home haha!) and can't find anything at the moment, but Hastings was one of those seaside places that people flocked to for their health - so maybe it was a TB sanatorium? Good luck! Mandy :) x

Anna Report 24 Nov 2004 11:44

Nearly everyone on the census page has the last box ticked(even the sister incharge of the home lol) I think it was prob just a line through the column to say they didnt have any disabilities, as theyve all got one on the next page too Anna :-)

Crista Report 24 Nov 2004 11:42

Zoe, I agree. If you look at the pages either side they all have those lines. Either that or the whole town was nuts! Crista

Zoe Report 24 Nov 2004 11:40

I'd go with convalescent home too. and I think the marks in the disability columns are the enumerators counting marks as even the sister in charge has one

Hi Susie, it's definitely All Saints something, the writing is very squashed up but could it be 'convalescent' home? The sister in charge of the home and her helper are listed as Sisters of Mercy, which would be Catholic. I thought maybe Catholic came into the name of the home, but it's too long for that, so convalescent looks a good bet. This is maybe why they've just put a tick instead of naming the disabilities - if everyone was convalescing, they probably all had different illnesses and maybe the enumerator couldn't be bothered to list them all!! Hope this helps, love Mandy :)
