Just thought I would let you know that I've ordered the 1905 John Robsons cert in the hope it will give clues... don't hold breath on account of the long gro wait. will let you's know the outcome. :D Thanks for all help, Liz

hiya, I had thought it would be an unusual name to research... but it's looking like there are several of them around... the original wild goose chase was on a john english robson which i was convinced had to be my gggrandfather or something.... but turned out to be no relation as yet (the one who went to australia). we have a john english robson born in 1887, son of Thomas english robson.. which could possibly be the 1905's father... but the 1905 one has no middle name listed which is frustrating. is it possible he would have given both his sons the same middle name?!

I guess this is the GRO reference for the John who Christine found: Name: ROBSON, John Record Type: Births Quarter: December Year: 1905 District: Hartlepool (1859-1938) County: Co. Durham Volume: 10a Page: 125

Found this entry on Ancestry - with such an unusual middle name I'd guess it is your family: Name: Robson, Thomas English Record Type: Births Quarter: March Year: 1903 District: Hartlepool (1859-1938) County: Co. Durham Volume: 10a Page: 127

Same site has this selection: Search Results Search births - results for JOHN ROBSON 1904 to 1906 Result Year Forename Initial Ref Number Click to contact 1 1904 JOHN G M-J-159-0-0424 Middlesbrough 2 1904 JOHN T H-A-191-0-82 Hartlepool 3 1905 JOHN H-A-199-0-333 Hartlepool 4 1906 JOHN C H-A-204-0-164 Hartlepool Ought to be no 3, assuming he was registered fairly promptly, but no middle name listed. Marriage cert arrived today... turns out we were chasing the wild goose. he was not as old as we were led to believe... he was only born in 1905... so now I have a whole new goose to chase. Thanks for all your help though... it's like a mystery quest. Liz

oh thats very cool. Thanks. the cert I've ordered is the one for my mum's parents (who is john english robson - supposed to have been born in 1898 but appears to be a fibber, lol) so hopefully it will tell me his Father is Thomas. :) this is all so fascinating.... but I dunno what to do with the 9 generations of wrong ancestors I have. LOL Anyone for Robson or Slight? :) Liz

When you say you have a marriage cert on the way, do you mean John's? I had a look on http://www.teesvalley-indexes.*co.uk (remove asterisk) and found this: Spouse Search Results Search marriages - results for spouse of THOMAS ROBSON Result Year Surname Forename Initial Ref Number Click to contact 1 1883 BORTHWICK MARGARET J H-999-17-0-153 Hartlepool 2 1883 ROBSON THOMAS E H-999-17-0-153 Hartlepool This looks like the right pairing of name for the parents? and about the right time? It would make Margaret about 18. *** Search Results Search births - results for JOHN ROBSON 1885 to 1889 Result Year Forename Initial Ref Number Click to contact 1 1885 JOHN BW S-N-108-0-0046 Stockton-on-Tees 2 1887 JOHN G S-N-115-0-0294 Stockton-on-Tees 3 1887 JOHN E H-A-99-0-189 Hartlepool 4 1889 JOHN S H-A-108-0-396 Hartlepool Number 3 looks like the one. along with Search Results Search births - results for STANLEY ROBSON 1888 to 1892 Result Year Forename Initial Ref Number Click to contact 1 1889 STANLEY H-A-111-0-198 Hartlepool Don't know if it's any use to you, but I had fun looking! Thank you it definitely appears to be someone related to the search in that census.... his father is Thomas English Robson registered birth in July-sept 1855 in stockton :):) Thanks again(no I'm not tired of saying it yet. lol) Liz

wow... if that is him and it looks like it may be that is amazing. We have a marriage cert on the way but who knows how long that may take. I can't thank you enough (it does however appear that all the other stuff we had collected is entirely the wrong family lol) Liz

It would make him 56 when they married rather than 45... well.. whats 11 years when your in love. lol . It's not like it's a common name that I've found lots of, In fact I only know of one other. Very interesting. Think I will have to order the cert. Thank you again. Liz

Robson, John English, 1887, June Quarter, Hartlepool (1859-1938), Co. Durham 10a 124 If you think that is the right one, that gives you the information to buy his birth certificate, which will provide mother's first and maiden name, and where they were living when he was born. Jan.

~Summer Scribe~ Report 2 Dec 2004 21:31

I want to find the birth of my mothers father, I thought it would be ...not easy as such but easier than it's proven. His name is John English Robson and he was supposedly born in 1898 (only John English Robson I've found is one born in 1831 who emmigrated to Australia in 1852 and married a mary Jane Ferguson). However I've found no John English for any of the quarters in 1898 in England, but a lot of Johns, I wanted to try to eliminate or focus down on one. I assume the only way to do that is to order certs tho.. and I can't afford that, especially as I have yet to rule out the possibility that he was born elsewhere and now it turns out the year might even be wrong :S Thanks, Liz

Not absolutely sure what you mean. But if you have a reference for a marriage you can send off for the certificate for £7. The cert will give you the names of the couple, where they were living at the time of marriage and the fathers of both and their occupations. What information on who do you want to find?

I'm new to this whole thing. I'm just wondering I found an entry for the marriage... the person I'm interested in for finding birth records has a common first name... who do I now narrow the search from the info that 1837 gave me? Thanks Liz
