Hello Mandy I thought you might like this little snippet from the book The Wonderful Story of London. It all helps with family history. Shirley The Royal Arsenal owes it's origin to an accident. In 1716 the Govenrment gun-foundry was at Moorfields, and several distinguished visitors were watching the casting of a cannon. Among the company was Andrew Schalch, a Swiss who noticed that the moulds were damp. This meant that when the metal was poured there would be an explosion. No notice was taken of his warning and the enevitable happened. Schalch escaped, was made master-founder, and chose Woolwich for the new Arsenal.
