Cant find her in 1871 ancestry - in 1881 she is a servant in Berkshire. No sign of her after that. Checked ancestry bmd for a marriage that would be suitable time/place but no Tom Jenkins coming up with any Ellen Higgs marriages.

Bless you, I suppose it could be that Ellen was telling porkies about her age as she gives 1862? I will have a look. Unfortunately my familyrellies is coming up error again so I cant look up the marriages at mo.

Hi Heather, You've certainly got me intrigued with this one now!! What about Ellen Higgs, christened 25/12/1860 at Longcot?

Heather

Heather Report 29 Jan 2005 11:39

Many thanks Wifey. I had seen both of those. I was quite excited by the Helen Longland, but I traced her to being born in Chelsea, not Berks! The other one also traced to another husband. BOO HOO. Thansk Susan. Strange how she so specifically puts a village on the 1901 and yet I cant find her being born there.

Thats so kind of you! Dont suppose Ill be lucky but all I have is what I have gleaned from the 1901 census. Ellen is married to a Thomas Jenkins and living in Southwark. She appears to have had his first child before marriage in Clerkenwell 1890, also called Thomas. Her age is shown as 39 in 1901 and place of birth transcribed as Longcroff, Berkshire. I suppose more likely Longcross, could be either on the image. So 1862 birth? Cant find a marriage in London or Berks for an Ellen and Tom Jenkins. Also cant find her with the baby in London in 1891 - cant think where she would be then. (Well, I have fed all the Thomas aged 1 into the search and not found him with a mum on their own). Many thanks.

Hi Heather, I have the parish register transcripts for Longworth and Longcot, so if you need a look-up ask away. Best wishes Paula

Many thanks - I have just trawled all the possible 9 year olds and just found that one possible in Longworth. Have fed her name into marriages on familyrellies and then cross matched all the marriage refs with Thomas Jenkins - nothing though!! Time to give that couple a rest for a while I think. Really appreciated everyones input. Thanks.

Heather, Just another thought, could it be Longcross? as that is by Windlesham. I know it's Surrey now, but possibly was in Berks years ago before the M3 went through. Kim

Heather, I'm sure years back there was a small area of Bracknell, Berks called Longshott, as Longshott Farm is still there. Kim

Hi, thats the problem - I dont have a surname. She is "married" to a Thomas Jenkins in 1901 living in Southwark. 4 kids, 1st born 1890 in Clerkenwell, 3 others 4 years later in Westminster (Thomas was a soldier at Wellington Barracks, Westminster) In 1891 he is in barracks and shown as single - however likely the first child is his as has same name. So cant find a marriage and thought I would check to see if I could find her through the census details, Ellen aged 39 born Longcroff, Berks. I had one 9 year old Ellen Batts (or Bates???) born Longworth but yet to find her marrying a Tom Jenkins. Many thanks for your help though! I shall carry on ploughing til my eyes give out.

Hi Heather I don't know Berkshire but had a bit of a google!! Could it possibly be (if possibly mis-transcribed!!!) a. Longcot b. Longworth?? These were from the BerkshireFHS site which lists parishes, districts and sub-districts (in the 1851 census bit) Sarah PS : Whats Ellen's surname??

I am trying to find an Ellen born c 1862 in (ancestry) 1901 shown on census as born Longcroff, Berkshire. I am assuming this may be Longcroft but even then a google search doesnt bring up the district/town for it. I am going mad trying to trace all the 8/9 year old Ellens in 1871 Berkshire. Any better ideas please?
