Hi Ann You might find the following list useful at some point. It's a list of burials (NBI) at Leeds Beckett St Cemetery - most of the Woodriff/Woodruff burials in Leeds seem to have been there. No ages, I'm afraid, and years only. Presumably "chd" means child. Joseph Woodriff (1862, chd) John William Woodriff (1863, chd) Martha Woodriff (1864) William Woodriff (1865, chd) Henry Woodriff (1868, chd) Sarah Ellen Woodriff (1870, chd) Charles Woodriff (1873) William Woodriff (1873) William Woodriff (1874, chd) Maria Woodriff (1880) Edward Woodruff (1883) Mary Ann Woodruff (1883) Mary Woodruff (1898) William Woodriff (1907, chd) Margaret Woodruff (1908) Lily Woodriff (1935) Irene Woodriff (1938, chd) Regards Dave

Hi there Just a minor point about FreeBMD. Yes, Ancestry use a copy of FreeBMDs database it but it's not always as up to date as the one at FreeBMDs own site. (I understand that there is often a delay of a few weeks before Ancestry upload the latest version.) Dave

Yes heather the plot thickens! Of course on the 1891 census *mary? wife could have been in hospital on the day of the census or just away visiting! William was a boarder on the1901 census + francis was in hospital AND is classed as W....................mind ,I can now get the home address hopefully by looking at the marys!! (still aint located william I reckon he was born out o W) :)

Heather

Heather Report 8 Feb 2005 13:55

Its a mystery where the wife is in 1891 though???

Ann, Heathers right. Theres nothing else on the page. The info on all these sites for BM & Ds is just whats transcribed from an index. The actual info on who married who, who gave birth to who is not indexed online. You have to order the certs and look for further info. BC gives parents names, dads occupation, mothers maiden name MC gives couples wherabouts, ages (sort of), Fathers names and occupations and sometimes witness names can help prove its the right couple. Hope this helps, LD PS. Doubtless the remaining missing name will be Mary - when FreeBMD transcribe it.

Heather Report 8 Feb 2005 13:47

Ann, Laird has already viewed it and there are only three people listed. As the only woman is a Jane, I dont think thats your girl as Francis is shown married to a Mary on the census, assuming that is him mistranscribed as Woodruff.

Ann Report 8 Feb 2005 13:45

Classic - you've got a 3 name situation .... but not sure I understand this now !! Francis is Williams dad ? So you MIGHT be lucky if you know his mums name was Jane .... Marriages Dec 1880 ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Hartley Jane Leeds 9b 568 Seaton Arthur Leeds 9b 568 Woodriff Francis Leeds 9b 568

Hi, I assumed you were looking at census images as the same info is free on freebmd. The names of brides and grooms are only listed in alphabetical order so it wont tell you who is with who Im afraid. And quite often I have found an odd number or even one poor soul on their own where none of the other names have been transcribed. If you have found the parents on a census then you will have the mothers first name so you may be able to work it out from that? I have some credits on familyrellies if you need a birth reference. Hi, this looks like him on the 1891, mum not there though - but Francis is recorded as married not widowed?? Woodriff, Francis 35 Leeds, Yorkshire Head Leeds Yorkshire Woodriff, Mary 7 Darlington Daughter Leeds Yorkshire Woodriff, William 9 Leeds, Yorkshire Son Leeds Yorkshire

Ann Report 8 Feb 2005 13:05

Once again , thanks folks! I had a feeling it might be a waste of money. I am looking for The birth of william woodriff/leeds 1880/1 (he's on the 1901 census aged 20) The marriage was Francis Woodriff 1880 Leeds vol.9b page 568 I am off to find the freeBMD you mentioned............ Hopefully I'll find it! Thanks

Ann, dunno why you should have to pay to view - theres no 'image' to view. Access it thru FreeBMD - its the same database ! As to what's there - usually there are 2 couples - ie 4 names (8 names prior to 1850ish I think), so unless you know the female christian name its Hobsons choice.... you cant depend on the order in which they are listed. In the case where you dont have a clue who married who, you can sometimes go to a later census and check if 'Female Smith' is now 'Female Bloggs' where Bloggs is the male name you know if you follow me..... Failing that you have to order both certs. And then theres the entries which have only 3 names ...... Update - slow typing again ! Heather - they are maiden names ! (For females !)

Ann The civil reg on Ancestry is the same as on FreeBMD - you don't get any more info than you can find on that site for free. If it's in a different section of Ancestry, then if you put the date & name of the person on here, someone could have a look for you. Richard

Heather

Heather Report 8 Feb 2005 12:50

Im afraid it wont show maiden names. The only way to do that is buy the birth certificate of one of the children or the marriage cert of the couple.

Ann

Ann Report 8 Feb 2005 12:44

I have found the name I want in Ancestry Civil Registrations Index -marriage.........I need to pay to view. Can some-one tell me what info I will get plz? It also says See Others on the page....Will I be able to get the spouses Maiden name. I am doing(trying to!) a bit of detective work as my Bgranfather is on the 1901 census as a boarder.I can't find a birth for him ( HIS father was in hosp at the time of census) I need his mothers maiden name Thanks a lot Ann
