I know this seems a simple thing to do, but I know when my father died and where, but I can't find it on 1837 0n line, I have emaild them with all of the info, and they can't find it, does any one have any other ideas please???? Bev

Thanx for that Ann, but my dad died in 1996 and Free BMD haven't got that far yet, I hve tried that on as well, I seem to be hiting a brick wall with this one. Bev

Bev, give me the name and I'll look on ancestry. Although they say they only go up to 1983 my Dad's (1984) and Uncle's (1990) are both on.

Ann I have emailed direct, I don't know what LDS is, but I have not found it on 1837, and freeBMD hasn't got that far yet. :( Bev

LDS = familysearch.org but it only has records for pre-1900. Write to the register office where the death was registered and ask them for a copy. You probably won't have any problems as long as you know the exact date, but if you do you can use your birth certificate to prove you're related.

Speedy, do you know who registered the death? Is there any way that the name could have been spelled incorrectly, or maybe his christian and middle names got reversed?? If there was a post mortem or inquest it could have delayed the registration, or if it was towards the end of the quarter, maybe it was registered in the next quarter. Maybe it wasn't registered where he lived, maybe he died in a different registration district? Just trying to think of ideas! Maz. XX

I have managed to get two death certs recently that arent on 1837online. I knew the burial date from the Parish Registers and sent to the local register ofice for the cert. They are not on 1837 I have checked again since receiving the certs. Margaret

Maz I have done the search for the surname only on 1837, as he died in 1986, I have now got every entry ever made for all the years and he is not there, the only thing I can think of there must be a problem as he comited suicide, he had a life of pain and could no longer cope with the pain. It was his 2nd wife who recorded the death and I know that he had swoped his 1st & 2nd names round, but the spelling of his surname would have been correct. But thanx for your tip. Bev

Sppedy, if he committed suicide there would have been an inquest, so the death may have been registered later than you think. I would PHONE the register office, I am sure it would be easier to explain that way and would bet that they would be helpful. Good luck. Maz. XX

Bev, I've just recently felt able to apply for my fathers original death cert as he took his own life 18 months ago. There was an inquest about 9 months later. I've just yesterday contacted the local RO, and they were very helpful and said they will find it just from date of death, and address of where it happened. Em

Speedy you can search the gro indexes on microfiche in the local record offices, they usually hold the same as the FRC hope this helps sandra

There's no finer place than the FRC in Islington. The tea's not great but the records are easily accessed and the staff extremely helpful. I'm away for a week but if you haven't got a result by then or the trip to London is a problem I'll have a look myself as I work 5 mins from the place. Simon
