How do you know when she died Katrina? Did Arthur re marry? Sam

Katrina Report 19 Feb 2005 01:54

Hi! Sam - I know what you mean. I wasn't sure when I saw she was 37 not 39/40 as she should be based on the birth in 1861. Presumably she decided to drop a couple years somewhere alone the line... Johnothan - Thanks for the offer. I actually signed up for ancestry this evening, so although I can now access it I am still learning what I'm doing, hence not even thinking about different spellings. I'm betting Hubert got sent to his Gran's because of two younguns and baby Reginald at Kate and Arthur's, so at least that solves that question. I do find it strange though that they are all registered as Ballamy except for Hubert who was down as Bellamy. Just need to find Kate's elusive death - not seeming to come up on ancestry. Thanks for all the help, Katrina xx

Looks good Katrina, I was looking for a 39yr old Kate!! No wonder Hubert went to stay at Grannys, they've got quite a brood now, he probably wanted a bit of peace :) They're under that name in 1891 too. Glad you've found them, British through & through ;)

Hi! Sam thanks for all the help - but I think I may have just found Arthur and Kate in 1901!!! Going by Nell's suggestion it may be misspelt, I looked and there is an Arthur and Kate Ballamy (rather than Bellamy) living in Devon in 1901 and they look like a fit. Just hope it lives up to scrutiny! Though now I'm starting to have doubts that Kate ever died! Love, Katrina xx

Sam - Thank you so much! You have been so busy and thanks for taking the time to look. I will look into that, although still can't work out how they managed to disappear in 1901 - probably hid in the basement! This branch of the family is proving the most difficult - all other branches, except the Bellamy/McLeans lived in Cornwall and most in or near the town I grew up in so they were a lot easier! I just hope the Arthur is not the one from India - they are enough of a problem already without having to find births in India!! Thanks again, Katrina xx

Ooh... Look at this household in 1881 Hugh (G.) Ashby abt 1866 Brackley, Northamptonshire, England Scholar Northam Arthur (E.) Bellamy abt 1866 Lucklow, India Scholar Northam Harry (R.) Jones abt 1865 India Scholar Northam Thomas (D.) Mc Lean abt 1866 Scotland Scholar Northam Arthur (L.) Moore abt 1867 Mt Abie, India Scholar Northam Thomas (S.) Mrquis abt 1866 Darjeeling, India Scholar Northam Athur (L.) Phillips abt 1865 India Scholar Northam Frances (A.) Redingferd abt 1866 Lowestof, Norfolk, England Scholar Northam Address: Kingsley College Priory Civil parish: Northam County/Island: Devon If this Arthur E Bellamy is the right one it seems he was born in India, and there's a McLean in the college too. This should be of some help. Sam

You're welcome :) I was still looking at 1901, there is an Arthur Bellamy in Devon aged 31, head living with a sister, no wife but it does say married, not widow. 1881 Kate Mc Lean abt 1862 Stoke Damerel, Devon, England Servant Stoke Damerel Bessie E. Morris abt 1852 Stoke Damerel, Devon, England Wife (Head) Stoke Damerel Percy Morris abt 1878 Stoke Damerel, Devon, England Son Stoke Damerel very surprised they're nowhere to be found in 1891 or 1901. They'll keep you busy Katrina! Regards Sam

Sam - Thank you so much for looking Kate and Arthur up for me. I think you are right about Alicia being her middle name - I just checked and in the 1871 census there was a Kate McLean living with the person I know to be Hubert's grandmother! You just found my gg-grandmother!! Now I just have to go and find what happened to them! Thank you so much and I wish you the best of luck in researching your family tree. Love, Katrina xx

Nell - Thank you for looking. I was starting to think they may be dead but if no matching death then who knows. Now I have an idea where to look. You've been a great help and good luck with your family tree. I know what you mean about mistranscribed - I spent ages looking for one of my greatgrandfathers on the 1901 census only to find they'd spelt his surname wrong! Thanks again, Katrina xx

Johnathon - thanks for the thought. I was wondering whether they had died myself. I'll look into it and see. Thanks, Katrina xx

I have a similair problem. One daughter age 4 (definately alive then) not with the rest of the family. Tried other known family, Grandparents aunts etc. Have been looking for ages Suppose it doesn't relyy matter where she was as she lived into old age but I would dearly love to know where she was night!!!!!

Unknown

Unknown Report 18 Feb 2005 22:59

Could they have been staying with Kate/Alicia's parents? nell

Unknown Report 18 Feb 2005 22:58

Hubert could have just been staying that one census night with his grandparents. His father and mother might have been on holiday somewhere else, or perhaps his father was working abroad. Or they might both have been ill and in hospital somewhere. Or they are in England and have been mistranscribed which would be quite likely - most of my relatives' details on 1901 are incorrect in some way. No deaths for either Arthur or Alicia or Kate Bellamy in Devon on Ancestry civil reg for the right time. nell

Just having a look at the 1901 census, I see Hubert with his grandmother as you said, you are assuming he lived there, and of course you may be right... it may not have been the case though, the only real fact is he was at this address on census night. He could have just been staying with granny, for literally one night. Here is his parents marriage, seems Alicia was her middle name, I wonder if they are on 1901 as Kate & Arthur. Definitely worth another look Regards Sam Marriages Mar 1890 -------------------------------- Bellamy Arthur Edward Stoke Damerel 5b 531 MCLEAN Kate Alicia Stoke Damerel 5b 531 Birth for Kate MCLEAN, Kate Alicia - 1861 September - Births Stoke Damerel Devon

Hi! Thanks for the reply. It may be possible that they emigrated, but at the 1901 census, Hubert (their son) was aged 9, so not sure whether they would have emigrated without him. But thanks for the idea and I'll look into it and see. Thanks again, Katrina xx

Maybe they emigrated.

Katrina Report 18 Feb 2005 22:18

Hi! I have come across a major problem in my family tree. From the 1901 census, my greatgrandad, Hubert Bellamy was living with his aunt, uncles and grandmother when the census was taken. Is this common? Also, I can't find any sign of his parents, Arthur and Alicia Bellamy (nee McLean) living in Devon (or anywhere else for that matter). No-one I have asked knows anything about this, and I have no idea when they were born, married or died, so I have no idea where to look next. Any ideas anyone? Thanks for the help. Katrina xx
