I gather, from a recent attempt to post a useful URL, that GR has realised that we could get round their censorship by adding * or () round the dots when they preceded 'co' or 'com'? It really is rather tedious, and I still don't understand what the problem is. Christine

Weird! I had to make half a dozen attempts to get: http://ukbdm . c o m/ (remove redundant spaces) to work. When I did my usual thing of just inserting an asterisk between the dot and the next bit it suppressed everything from the asterisk to the right-hand bracket on the line below! I'll try again: http://ukbdm.*com (remove *) Christine

It's possible to put all web site addresses in a numerical form, such as http://212.58.226.50/ (BBC News) To do this... Start --> Programs --> Accessories --> Command Prompt then type in 'ping news.bbc(.)co(.)uk' (without the quotes and brackets) You'll see something like the output below. The web address in numbers is the one where the reply comes from...in this case 212.58.226.50 Of course this has the disadvantage that at some time the numbers change but the word based address does not. =================================== Microsoft Windows 2000 [Version 5.00.2195] (C) Copyright 1985-2000 Microsoft Corp. C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>ping news.bbc(.)co(.)uk Pinging newswww.bbc.net.uk [212.58.226.50] with 32 bytes of data: Reply from 212.58.226.50: bytes=32 time=50ms TTL=55 Reply from 212.58.226.50: bytes=32 time=40ms TTL=55 Reply from 212.58.226.50: bytes=32 time=40ms TTL=55 Reply from 212.58.226.50: bytes=32 time=50ms TTL=55 Ping statistics for 212.58.226.50: Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss), Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds: Minimum = 40ms, Maximum = 50ms, Average = 45ms C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>

Yes I would like to know too. Can't see it being a problem as everyone on here is helping each other and GC is successful because of it.

Just a little helpful tip. It's only address that end in dot *(co) something So you can't post .*com or .*co.*uk without brackets or stars or something. Likewise you can post things that end .org. like www.familysearch.org or www.1901census.nationalarchives.gov.uk See, what I mean? Ridiculous carry on if you ask me, this is the only site I know that you can't type a full web address, without all this b*g*ring about!!!! Debbie

That's what I was originally trying to do when it got suppressed. I normally just put the asterisk in - can't remember now who suggested the idea - but I do know it only matters if the 'dot' is immediately followed by the letters C and O, whatever the word actually is - even if it's Cornwall or Colleague or Copperplate or... I still don't know why it threw a wobbly on the other thread, 'cos I had no trouble when I tried again further up this list. Christine
