I agree Lyla. I think he is the one in the Navy - Thinking abou t it, what is it like to search the Scotish census? Never done it before! Would that give his father's occupation if I could find him on the 1871? His father was a brass finisher and also called James. at the time of his son's birth and so probably for his marriage he was in the merchant service but then went into the royal navy, I have ernesets Marriage certificate and it states royal navy deceased on it. Once again, thanks for your help Alice

Hi there Lou and Lyla Thank you for doing all this while I am at work! Lyla, I think it unlikely he was visiting in scotland , although my father said James came fron there - but not with any certainty! Not even sure Ernest knew where his dad came from - or my dad would have been certain. i recently asked my aunr the only survuiving child of edward and she had no idea! I think the Coes look likely - but odd to be transcribed twice. I am going to have tea, then check out some of the info you have given me. Thanks very much for the leads. Alice

Oh blast! Very tired when I found her in 1871 so never thought to check for her in 1881! I did a search earlier for any James Cox, Blacksmith's in 1881, but nothing, although her father may not still have been alive in 1881 depending on when he was born. I still can't find anything even remotely close for Ernest Edward so if James's family are in Scotland, you may be onto something with him visiting relatives up there! Lou

Yes That's right. In 1891 she is still married but no son to be seen! In 1901 I can find him he has left home but not far from mum - and she is married to another man with 2 children. Dad has been lost at sea. Ernest was my grandfather what a tough life for a young boy! Alice

Fab...so a birth place at least!

Mad Alice

Mad Alice Report 21 Feb 2005 00:10

Her first husband was lost at sea and she remarried. In 1901 she was Mary Ann Cardwell. On that census ahe was born in Lewisham too. I put a thread on a few months ago but I really feel they must all be there somewhere! Just a matter of finding them...... Alice

So how do you know she was born in Lewisham? Sorry, I'm not up to speed here, I must have missed this thread before! Are you basing her birth place and birth year on the 1891 census info? Lou

Mad Alice Report 20 Feb 2005 23:59

She wa married in July 1881 in Deptford at St Nicholas church.

I have always thought if I could find the son he may be with her family. I think he may have been mis-transcribed, or someone said he was born somewhere different! Alice

Mad Alice Report 20 Feb 2005 23:51

No Lou. I have her Marriage certificate which gives dad's name. I have tried to look for her birth but I don't really know where to start with such a common name and have no idea which were in lewisham. Alice

Alice Do you know Mary Ann's mother's name? Lou

Mad Alice

Mad Alice Report 20 Feb 2005 23:17

I feel that if I could find him a wall might start crumbling. He would be 5 years old born in Middlesex. Mum, Mary Ann Allison is a domestic servant in Lewisham where she was born in 1861. Dad, James Allison( a huge brick wall)! is probably at sea. I have never found Mary Ann on a census for her maiden name Cox - so can get no further back there. Her dad was James Cox a blacksmith if anyone out there can find him! Apologies to anyone who has heard all this before - but has anyone any ideas as to how to move back? ALICE
