Tony, Ah... this is an interesting theory and of course your maths are sort of correct. Now go back another ten gg's to 30 generations, which is approx 1066, and how many ancestors are ther then? Actually it is hugely more than thepopulation at the time. So what does this mean? Probably that we are more interrelted than you think as a result of cousins marring etc. So next time you bump up against someone on the tube, just think, you might share the same ancestors. Scarry eh...?

So how come all women are descended from less than a dozen Eves? Your maths would have my stone age ancestors so thick upon the planet, there'd be no room left for the dinosaurs! B

Peter The Scientific word for that is 'implection' (Cousin marriages, that is, and the effect it has on the number of your ancestors) Marjorie

As I have always thought everyone is related to everyone. I think it is impossible to finish the family tree there is always a new road to go down. Fern.

Does anyone else find that the siblings of, say 3 x grannie, are far more interesting than your actual direct line or am I just directly descended from people who seemed fairly settled all their life! Apart from my Trinity Pilots, all my direct line are cotton spinners or ag labs. They all seemed to be hatched, matched and despatched after several children without a great deal of scandal attached. Then I look further into the family and find that one ggrandfather's brother and sister shacked up together (until I can prove otherwise!). Another one of them did at least 10yrs in Brixton Prison. And another one had 15 children with 4 wives, 2 of whom I can't find deaths for so suspect he may have just ditched them for younger models! I can't see me ever 'finishing' the tree, nor would I want to...these people are just so fascinating!

Are you trying to tell me I was already related to the mother-in-law before I married her son?

Vickie

Vickie Report 5 Mar 2005 23:29

I have a man married to his niece, makes for an interesting state of relationships...if they divorce they still have to face each other at family do's. My mum and dad's line have intermarried on two occasions way back, now I have discovered two women marrying into mum's line from my ex mother in laws...and they come from opposite ends of Vict, Australia......SCARY!!! LOL Vickie

And to think I was stressing that my 3 x grandmother might have actually been a prostitute. Now all I can think about is the fact that I'm still related to my ex husband and his mother and probably to my other half's ex wife. These are not pretty thoughts especially as the ex wife is known as the psycho hose beast for reasons I wont go into in a public forum!

Maggie She's definitely one of a kind....thank goodness! I'd better not say too much (she might be a member, you never know!) but lets just say she had a different opinion of what monogamous meant, she likes knives (I have the scars!) and has a problem with split personality and on occasions likes to do things and pretend that she's me! Lovely woman! Lou
