NOW found them in 1841...with mother Ann as well. None of them born in the county except sister Esther who is 2 in 1841. Doesn't make sense!!!!! Lou

I've found Benjamin in 1851 and he's calling himself Benjamin! Father Thomas is widowed so no mother (blast!) but several bruvs and sisters for Benjamin who may provide some leads if I get hideously stuck! He's also claiming to be 21 in 1851 which makes born slightly earlier than I'd thought but we all know how reliable census ages are! Got a better idea of birthplaces now as well and they're definitely more on the Stockport side than the Ashton under Lyne so the marriage is looking all the more plausible! Only a small bit of progress but after looking at 1067 pages of census returns I feel pretty chuffed to have found them! Lou

Hi Barbara Thanks for that...I LIVE here and I didn't know that about the boundaries! Where I live is what used to be Castle Hall and you have to have money to live in Matley! Lou

Hi Barbara Am halfway thru vid now...fantastic! SAMUEL....! I assume its the same chap entered twice although WHY I can't imagine! The local office says there's only ONE Samuel Hill in that qtr and his father aint Benjamin! There's also one on Cheshire BMD as well which may or may not be that same one (but without the GRO ref you can't tell!) so I emailed them about that one too and they said father didn't match again! Chrissie A definite possibility, especially if Benjamin and Elizabeth got married in Stockport, why not register a birth in a totally different district to the one you live in! Have just chucked £7 at Ashton reg office for the 6th Feb 1863 cert. IF they now come back and say they don't have one for that date and name, then he either wasn't registered or he was registered in another district! Grrrr! Lou

Lou What about the two Samuels registered in April-June in Manchester - could they be a possibility? Chrissie x

Hi Lou Sorry - I told you that I'm easily confused. Am off to look for Samuel :)))) Chrissie

Hi Chrissie Sorry I'm a bit confused...it was Samuel who was born in 1863, not Benjamin. Was that what you meant? I live in the next village to Dukinfield and bizarrely some of the houses they lived in are still standing! Bolton is too far away for it to be an option unfortunately! Lou

Lou Bear with me here. I've just come back and to save me reading everything again (I'm easily confused:)))) I just ran off 1837 pages for Jan-March and April-May 1863. Then I got out a map. Dukinfield and Hyde are next door to each other, so his father saying he was born in Hyde is no surprise. I then looked at all the Benjamin Hill ones and the nearest is Jan-March Bolton 8c 304. Have you been in touch with the Bolton Register Office to check whether that certificate has the right parents on? Chrissie x

There's a baptism on IGI for Benjamin Hill in Ashton under Lyne, right birth year, father John. It gets worse...........! Will let you know how I get on with the cert! Email all received, Liz, thank you! Lou

Thanks both of you! Have put a grovelling look up request on the board for Benjamin in 1841 (praying that Haughton Green isn't enormous!). The reg office MUST have his cert....BMD's that were registered in Stockport cos the events happened in Hyde are NOW with the Ashton under Lyne office since all the boundaries changed... SO, I'm going to throw £7 at them and ask them for the cert for Samuel Hill born 6th Feb 1863 and see what it says. They can't ALL have been born on the same day, surely!!! Lou

Hi Tracy No, you're spot on! THIS is my family in 1871 Benjamin Hill 38 Haughton Green Head Dukinfield Lancashire Elizabeth Hill 34 Hyde Wife Dukinfield Lancashire John Hill 6 Dukinfield Son Dukinfield Lancashire Margaret E Hill 3 weeks Dukinfield Daughter Dukinfield Lancashire Samuel Hill 8 Hyde Son Dukinfield Lancashire Benjamin and John are more than likely related somewhere (brothers or cousins) and it's confusing that they all chose the same names for the children somewhere along the way! By 1871 the family ARE living in Dukinfield so was Samuel NOT born there (it says HYDE in 1871!) but just THINKS he was cos he grew up there! Still doesn't explain why the local reg office don't have his cert UNLESS he was registered at Stockport. BLAST...never thought of that. You've not got a spare 1837 credit to check March Qtr 1863 for a Samuel Hill in either Manchester or Stockport, have you???? Lou

Maybe there are two families? James and Joseph aren't with the rest of them in 1871. I did find this... John Hill 40 Dukinfield, Cheshire, England Head Dukinfield Lancashire Jane Hill 38 Bolton, Lancashire, England Wife Dukinfield Lancashire James Hill 14 Dukinfield, Cheshire, England Son Dukinfield Lancashire Joseph Hill 12 Dukinfield, Cheshire, England Son Dukinfield Lancashire William E Hill 9 Dukinfield, Cheshire, England Son Dukinfield Lancashire Albert Hill 7 Dukinfield, Cheshire, England Son Dukinfield Lancashire Elizabeth A Hill 3 Sheffield, Yorkshire, England Daughter Dukinfield Lancashire but it doesn't quite fit. Very confusing!

Hi Liz That did occur to me but why get married as Benjamin yet not use it on the children's birth certs, unless the Benjamin/Elizabeth Clegg marriage is wrong! I need to try and locate him on the 1841/1851 census while he's still at home with daddy Thomas....BEFORE he has chance to start modifying his name! I've trawled about 600 pages of the 1851 so far and come up with diddly squat, better do some more hunting tonight and see whether some kind soul will check the 1841 for me, which I don't have! Lou

Hi Tracy That's what I don't understand...ALL of the children appear to have been registered but why don't the father's names match up on the earlier ones??? Lou

Lou, I had a look on Cheshire BMD. The 3 boys names that are in 1881 are on there, and in the right years, all in Dukinfield registers. Might be a good idea to buy one, or all of them, to find what you're looking for. Margaret is there too.

Unknown Report 9 Mar 2005 12:59

Hi Liz Thanks for that. I'm pretty sure that I have all of those but will double check later in case there's one that I've missed somewhere along the way! Chrissie Basically, yes...none of them have a father called Benjamin on the cert and the mother Elizabeth's maiden name isn't Clegg to match the marriage I found! The only thing I've NOT done (which might be my next option!) is to ask them to send me the certificate for the Samuel Hill born 6th Feb 1863 in Dukinfield and see what it says! Got to work this aft but back later! Thanks both of you! Lou

Hi Lou I hope I have read this correctly. Have you tried contacting Ashton under Lyne about the two Samuel Births that you have found and asking for the correct parents names? Chrissie

Unknown Report 9 Mar 2005 12:03

On BVRI, my ggrandfather SAMUEL HILL is stated as being born on 6th Feb 1863 in Dukinfield and baptised on the 29th March of the same year. Parents Benjamin and Elizabeth Hill. There are two Samuel Hill birth’s in the Ashton under Lyne registration district on the GRO indexes and one on Cheshire BMD that may or may not be a 3rd one. I've had all of them reference checked and not one has a father called Benjamin. I have Benjamin and Elizabeth on the 1861 census living in Dukinfield with a 2 year old Joseph and 9 month old James. The only marriage I can find between a Benjamin Hill and an Elizabeth was in Stockport in 1856, giving her maiden name as CLEGG. It wasn't where I was expecting them to be married given their birthplaces but its not impossible. However, I can’t tie this up for definite without her maiden name on a birth cert. So given that I couldn’t locate Samuel’s, I contacted the local Register Office regarding the birth certificates for Joseph and James. They have contacted me this morning to say that the father on the certificates is not called Benjamin. The mother is called Elizabeth but maiden name not CLEGG! On the marriage certificate, Benjamin’s father is given as Thomas Hill, but as yet I can’t locate Benjamin and Thomas together on the 1851 census. So what now???? Thanks Lou
