An Olde Crone

An Olde Crone Report 1 Apr 2005 23:13

A friend of mine has two children, boy and younger girl. Her husband always called the boy 'son' as in 'Don't do that, son'. The little girl, as soon as she could speak, called her brother 'Son' as presumably she had never heard his proper name used! Marjorie

Seems silly I know But my elder bro was always called 'Boy' even tho his name was Stanley. He finally rebelled against this when he was in doing his national service & it was very difficult for all of us to drop the BOY & start using his correct name. So its poss i suppose for a nickname to be on a census return Shirley

Thank you all, I have an old book of my nans there are so many names in it who were Goodchilds and so many of them had nicknames it gets so confusing there were a lot of boys so I suppose SON could have been any one of them. thank you Margaret

This won't help either. On the 1901 census, a Rosey Plested, daughter of George Weber was reccorded. Her maiden name was actually Louisa Mortimer, adopted daugh. of George Weber. Makes searching difficult. My aunt said she had an Aunt Rose, who was found on the doorstep. We believe, Louisa, Rosey and Rose found on the doorstep were one and the same. David

One of my uncles was always called Uncle Son. It wasn't until I was an adult and asked him what his proper name was. Baptised Henry Thomas but was called Son as he was the youngest! Sorry no help to you I know but I think it was quite common in the past. Hope you find him, good hunting, Jean

I know men called Sonny as an actual name and also just as a family nickname, so could be either. Christine

Hi This won't help a bit. My Uncle Sonny was christened Henry. He was the 7th of ten & the 3rd boy. His eldest boy was also christened Henry & known as Young Sonny. Vivienne

I've had a look on Ancestry 1901 and there are actually a few people called 'Son'. A lot of the entries are for 'infant son' and some of the others if you look at the image say Jon. or Sam. or Tom. but I've spotted two who appear to really be called Son.

Can you find this John on any previous Census? Post ages and places on here if you need an 1891 lookup.

No help at all, but could this be a nickname of the Cissie (short for sister) variety? Might he have had the same name as his father? Or just looked young?

Hi Thank you both I do know his surname was Goodchild and I know there was a Stanley but on the 1901 census the only person I can find the right age the right place and the right wife is a John do you think he might have said SON and they thought he said John Margaret

I haven't heard of this name at all before. I would guess he maybe had one of those first names that was really a surname, Hanson, Kitson, etc. anything that ended in 'son' really. But then again my Nan's 'Uncle Non' turned out to be William Albert!
