Stillbirths were not required to be registered until 1927. The register is closed to all apart from the parents or siblings of the child. I find it so sad as my grandmother had a stillborn girl and I would like to feel I could commemorate that child's existence. Unfortunately, no-one is left who knows when she was born or which husband was the Father.

My grandmother had several stillborn children after my mother was born., due to being rhesus negative. Mum remembers one who lived a few days and I have both birth and death certs for him. Mum doesn`t think that any of stillbirths were ever registered.

Val

Val Report 13 Apr 2005 23:37
