Family Search or IGI should be used as guide only. The site is riddled with errors that nobody seems to want to correct - easier to say 'we got 20 million names' that correct them down to 3 million. Talking with people in the States, they are really up in arms about it and I have had my tree upset by their view of my ancestors in Germany and then in the past 24 hours I have seen births in Liverpool that just do not exist. Advice is to use it as little as possible and always check out anything you find with the actual event which you will find in the local archive.

Remember it is an INDEX - a starting point for looking for things - not a final answer.

The IGI is a combination of transcribed parish records and members's submissions. The parish records are as accurate as any other transcribed records though they do seem reluctant to correct any errors - there is an error in one of my family but I think it has never been corrected. But the members's submissions can be very optimistic so should only be used as a guide and rarely trusted. MB

I have always used this site for information, and never had any problems. I have also been to one of there Family Search Centres here in Manchester, where you can look at all records on film. They don't charge, and they are very helpfull. I found, with the help of one of their staff, quite a bit of info.

I think Mormons believe they can'save' their ancestors even after their death by tracing them all. Kim

Yes, they come up with this now and then usually when they are doing some updating - dont worry, you can go back in with no problems.

Lizzy, Dont worry. This happened to me too last night (Saturday). I was searching the 1881 census, from house to house within a certain town for relations - it was time consuming. I got their message too. Waited five minutes - then went on again - no problems. I think they are using this when the site is really busy as a deterrant to people who spend over a certain time on the site. Probably no more serious than the 'site down for maintenance' message that they use. I use the site very rarely now, last year spent 1-2 hours on it at one go and never had any probs. Just another indication of how popular this hobby has become !! Elaine x.

I'm sorry to be dim but isn't this just the mormon site we all use? What do you mean you have been requesting information? Do you mean just searching as we all do or is there something else you can do that i'm not aware of? Pam

Same thing happened to me last year and it was the first time I'd visited the site for about 6 months. This is probably just a coinstance [heck I can't spell that] but the next thing I knew was I had a virus on the pc, although I got the same message as you I thought maybe they detected the virus. Yeah it happened to me not long after I started doing this. It came up with some sort of message that suggested I was doing automated searches - eg a computer program. I was shocked but went straight back into the site and it was hunky dory Beth :))

I've heard someone else say this. I'd be interested how much info equals 'vast'? I haven't used the site very much recently but I did get thousands of records to trawl through last year. I was using it for ages with no problem. Anne
