Spectacles on FreeBMD!

I have just put in a search on FreeBMD and when the results came up there was a pair of spectacles next to the entries. When I clicked on the specs it took me to a link where I could view the image they were taken from. This is great and saves time trawling through the images. It doesn't appear that all entries have spectacles yet though so it must be work in progress. If you want to give it a try enter a Death search for Benjamin Greenley, All Districts, All Counties, 1901 to 1912. Jeanette x

Hi Jeanette Looks really good - a great improvement - wonder when they'll all have it, or if it depends whether the transcriber is able to scan them or not? Trudy

Wow that makes things easyer than tracking throught hundreds of pages per quarter. Hopfully they get every entry to link up soon.

Just been having a little play around and it seems that the specs are coming up on all birth and death records but only on some Marriage records. I have tried clicking on the specs for a marriage but the link is taking ages to load. Jeanette x

Eventually got the link for the marriage to load but now I'm confused! It asks you to choose the scan file you want to view (I was given a choice of 3) so being nosy I had a look at them all! The first one had the scan for the gentleman I had looked up. The other 2 didn't seem to have any bearing whatsoever on the search I had put in. One gave me a list of surnames beginning with P and the other surnames beginning with T. The search I put in was Marriage William Brady, East Yorkshire, Dec quarter 1858. The partner in the marriage was Betsey Baker. There is only one scan to look at when I click on Betsey. So do I report the other scans as being incorrect or am I missing something? Jeanette x

Jeanette, as there are two marriages recorded on each register page four people would have the same GRO reference number for their marriage. I'd guess that the other two index pages you got might contain the names of the other couple?

That's what I thought too Judith but they don't!

Not all FreeBMD transcriptions are actually from scans. Some people transcribe from a fiche or a printout and FreeBMD don't have scans for all of those pages, which is why some entries don't have the spectacles next to them. There is a button to click to confirm whether they have given you the right scan or the wrong one, so if you're sure it's the wrong one, click the button to tell them! Kate.

I'll do that Kate. It is interesting to note that the scans are from different sources. The correct one has an ONS reference code next to it, but the 2 wrong ones have LDS reference codes next to them Jeanette x

That's very odd Julia! When I was trying them earlier some were taking longer than others. I'm no computer techie and this might not help, but have you deleted your cookies and temporary internet files recently. I sometimes find a good clear out sorts out all kinds of glitches! Jeanette x

Jeanette, must be my mind, but everytime I see your posting I think of 'Nuns on the Run' - how to cross yourself 'Spectacles, Testicles, Wallet and Watch'.
