I'm trying (so far in vain!) to find a birth registration for one of my 4xgrandparents children. I've now found him on the 1861 census stating his birthplace as St George in the East. I've tried Genuki but all it says for SGITE is Created 1837, abolished 1926, incorporated into Stepney district. Does anyone know what areas it covered and would Stepney, c.1840, have come under SGITE? Thanks Lou

If you have found him on FreeBMD then click on the Reg district and it will open a window that will link you to www*fhsc*org*uk, and that lists the places included within the districts. Or you can go to the website direct, but my method leads you straight to the district you're after!

Hi Julia Several birth 'possibles' have been found for me in the GRO indexes at the FRC. None of them have been transcribed onto freebmd or ancestry (but having seen a sample of the images I can understand why, they're appalling) However, I have accessed St George in the East through ancestry but it doesn't tell you anything more than Genuki does. Lou MMM toughie LOL I don't think so becasue Stepney was a district in it's own right at the same time as St geo was a district, does that make sense??? Thanks Sarah/Jane & Shelli! I'm confused, I think I'll have another drink! I don't think multimap will help either. I'm well aware of where Stepney is but the person I'm looking for is on the 1841 census born in county (Essex), birthplace in 51 given as Harwich (again still in Essex). By 61 birthplace given as St George in the East, living in Stepney. No birth reg in any of the reg districts in Essex for him. The only 3 possibles for him in the GRO indexes are Stepney, Royston and Depwade. I lose him after 1861 so can't see what he says in later census. Grrrr! Lou

Lou, St. George in the East is a reg. district of its own. Its borders are Stepney, Mile End Old Town and Whitechapel. It contains 6 churches that make up the district. Hope this is of some help. Jean x.

right so tell us what you have in 41, 51 and 61 and we'll look in 71 onwards see if we can find him for you and narrow it won????

Shelli Thank you, a fresh pair of eyes might help! Thomas Martin - 1841 census living in Thorpe le Soken, Essex with my 4xgrandparents Edward and Mary Martin. Age quite clearly 9 months. 1851 census living with Edward and Mary, relationship given as SON, birthplace Harwich, aged 10 1861 - living 20 Wellesley Street, Stepney, birthplace St George in the East. Relationship given as Lodger BUT the people he is living with are Henry and Sarah Stuart. Henry born 1816 Harwich, Essex. Without confusing too much, Henry's younger brother William married Elizabeth Martin. Thomas's older sister! Help! Lou

Lou sorry nothing obvious is jumping out at me... am off to bed now been up since 6 YAWNNNNNN thanks to the kids ggrrrrr, but just wondered do you have anything on Thomas after 1861, that might help pin him down??? Will look in tomorrow at some point and see if it has been resolved Shell

One more thought.... Did he die before 1871??? Is that why you can't find him in later census??? From Free BMD.... Deaths Dec 1863 Martin Thomas Stepney 1c 376 Deaths Mar 1865 MARTIN Thomas Bethnal Gn 1c 213 MARTIN Thomas Bethnal Gn 1c 244 no ages so not very helpful

Hi Zoe When you get to Westminster (whenever, no rush!). Christopher Henry Hooper baptised 20th Feb 1840 St Mary Le Strand. Father's occupation and an address would be fantastic Christopher Hooper married Mary Elizabeth Cottle 10th October 1852 St Mary Le Strand Interested in whether this is a 2nd marriage for Christopher and an address. It's more than likely a 2nd marriage for Mary Elizabeth cos although IGI gives her name as Cottle, Freebmd gives her as Cottle or Worrall! That make sense???? Lou
