Jess. Yes - John Marsh was born in Beaminster, moved to Malmesbury before or after he went to the Crimea. Married a Julia Porter in Malmesbury 1859. From there they went to Hemel Hempstead, then to Luton by 1878. John must have been a randy old devil. He lied about his age on marriage lines and was 20 years older than his wife. His youngest son was only 3yrs old when he died in 1883. Actually when his first son was born his address was given as Setbury, Gloucestershire. Must be on the borders as have seen this given as Wilts. The reason I am checking on his father Philip in the early years is to find out if he also moved up country. I am unable to find ony info on him after 1826 in Yeovil, Somerset. Mo

Jess. Thanks a million for the 'look ups' on Scrivener. If anyone was to look on the 1861 and 71 you gave it would make them realise that you cannot take what you see to be correct. There must be 50% error in them and they were the same family. They are proof that you must still confirm what you find if you want your tree to be correct. However, when you can find the time, would you be kind enough to look up two more on other side of my family on 1861 Census. MARSH. Philip. Yeovil. Somerset. Age approx 63 (Wife Elizabeth) MARSH. John. Malmesbury. Wiltshire. Age 32 to 42 (knocked 10yrs off when married) Born Beaminster. Dorset. (Wife Julia) Thanks Mo.

Maureen

Maureen Report 17 May 2005 13:55

Hi Jess. Guess I am confusing you somewhat. The families I am investigating are as follows: Father: Thomas SCRIVENER/SCRIVENOR c1803 Luton, Beds Son: Charles 1824 - Wife Eliza G Son: James OR Edward James OR E. J. b. 1844 (James called himself all these names- not sure his birth name as birth not registered) These are three generations - have just about sussed out James. Have the marriage cert of Charles BUT still checking on Charles children and other info. Charles marriage cert gives a Thomas as father. This is as much as I know to date. I wondered if Thomas was still alive in 1861 and gives his wifes name or something more I can check on. I guess my biggest problem is Thomas. (You already gave me info on Charles). If you could check him out on 1861 census would be greatful. Mo
