The transcriptions on Freebmd aren't complete, yet and therefore there will be some missing brides or grooms, you would have to look on 1837 online , and even then.... Kim

Getting odd numbers of names is surprisingly common. I've even had 3 men and one woman come up!! I think its often down to transcribers being unable to read the writing or entering wrong volume/page numbers so that on web databases the fourth entry doesn't appear. I've ordered 2 marriages now with only one name to go and both came up trumps. So if you like the odd flutter on the National, put £7 on a marriage cert to win! I start by assuming the oldest child is the nearest to the date of marriage. Good luck. Simon

Have you looked for mistranscribed as ---Merritt? in 1881 census;; Some fit the bill,,with wife Mary--in the Stepney area; Any older children may confirm this..... Kay,

Thanks Helen, will try. or Take a visit to the records office. Her name is French since at the age of 22 she was a widower her Fiancee at the age of 26 was also a widower...Do you recon they bumped of their partners so they could marry?

Can't find any Robert Messitt on the 1881 census. nell

Unknown Report 14 Jun 2005 20:39

You should be able to check both partners on 1837online, but you have to pay. alternatively you can look in the GRO indexes on microfiche in a library/archive. But why would their daughter's surname be French? Surely it should be Messit? nell

Suzieuki Report 14 Jun 2005 20:33

I've tried to find the marriage of Robert Messitt to Mary Ann Fivineaux, I believe they married in this country though Mary was of French decent probably born in France. But I only get 3people on the marriage page instead of the even number you expect. Is the full page not Updated yet? The family were around the Stepney area of London and I only have dates for their Daughters Marriage as 29/06/1885 when she was 22 (Her surname was 'French') to go on since I can get no further info on the census. Anyone give me a clue please.
