sarah, his dad was alive then as i have him on a wedding photo of his daughter, [granddads sister] nan and granddad are also on it, it was about 1930--40s. g.granddad was a bargeman, as was granddad, and my dad was a captain on the tugs[lameys tugs] so it is in the family. thanks for your help, chris.

And to re-iterate what Carole said - there are no George Glover's with an appropriate occupation in 1901. Not only might dad have been in the Boer War, maybe he had already died? I would have thought at a bargeman, his family are likely to have been in the same occupation for generations, so it could be worth investigating all Glover bargeman/waterman etc to see if you can get some sort of pattern established (1881 Ancestry or CD's you can search occupations and also the Nat Archives version of the 1901). Obviously this would be a last resort!! Have I already said that if Edward Glover lived to after 1966 his dob should be on his death cert? Might help with finding the correct birth cert - not forgetting the data given at death might be wrong lol Good Luck Sarah

Hi Chris, The full name would only appear on the mariage certificate if the person gave it, so if he said his name was Edward Glover, then that's the name the minister/registrar would have recorded. Also, sorry, I think I might have confused you about the 1901 census. what I was trying to say was that Edward's father George might not be on the census at all, if he was serving during the Boer War and was abroad on census night. If that was the case, then Edward could be with just his mother (and any siblings). This would mean you'd have to widen your census search, but it might explain why you can't find an Edward with a father George. Best wishes, Carole

Just for a millisecond then I thought I had the b*****s!! Turned out I had accidentally entered the wrong name! I was looking for 'George Glover, bargeman' or similar, but put in Edward by mistake (this in 1901). Turned up a waterman (on canal) called Edward Glover with son Edward (amongst others!) aged 3. How frustrating - maybe he is your distant cousin lol In case you need to follow this family up later, this is them in 1901: Charles Glover abt 1900 Cheshire, England Son Kirkdale Lancashire Edward Glover abt 1866 Tinsley, Lancashire, England Head Kirkdale Lancashire Edward Glover abt 1898 Runcorn, Cheshire, England Son Kirkdale Lancashire Francis Glover abt 1901 Liverpool, Lancashire, England Son Kirkdale Lancashire George Glover abt 1896 Liverpool, Lancashire, England Son Kirkdale Lancashire Jane A Glover abt 1893 Leigh Daughter Kirkdale Lancashire Mary Glover abt 1860 Hacking Bdge, Cheshire, England Wife Kirkdale Lancashire Robert Glover abt 1887 Leigh, Lancashire, England Son Kirkdale Lancashire Sarah

Unfortunately, that doesn't help trying to find his family. It looks like you are going to have to buy more than one certificate..... can't suggest anything else really. I was lucky, my names were uncommon... they've gotten more common as I've got further back, but I was pretty lucky to begin with. Good luck. xx

thanks ever so much everyone, now i have something to go on! carole ann, i don't know if he had any other name, but on the marriege cert it just has edward, if he had any other name wouldn't it be on the cert? my nan's full name is on it, but her fathers full name isn't!! i would of thought they would have to put the full name[the groom not the father] chris. ps: he was born January, so he would be on 1901 census.

Hi Chris, Are you sure Edward was his first christian name, and not his middle name? My great-grandfather, who was born about the same time was called William Frederick after his father, and that's the name on his birth certificate, but he was always known as Frederick William. Also, you might not find him with George if his dad was serving in the Boer War in 1901. Carole
