Sam, Don't blame your ancestors - blame the hard of hearing pee'd of bloke who wrote the details down!! Try saying the place name with a strong accent. I find the mistakes are worst if ancestor has moved from place of birth, say Cornwall, to somewhere like Cumbria in their 20's. They still have the Cornish accent, and the ennumerator has no idea of the place of birth they are telling them, for example, I used to live in St Austell, pronounced by the locals as 'Sinossell'. How would a Cumbrian write that???? Other examples are Mousehole, pronounced 'Muzzel', Launceston, pronounced 'Lunssen' etc etc maggie

Sam - thanks but I really don't want yours - got enough trouble with my own. Can empathise with Karen. Mine are Scottish travellers! And my gg grandmother (one of the travellers) used 4 different surnames throughout her (short but very eventful!) life, and I can't find her birth under any of them!! Ellen.

Sam Don't know whether you've seen this website. www.amisonfamilytree.co.uk Has LOTS of info on the Amison family of Longton/Dresden/Normacot/Meir etc. Hope it's useful!

Hi Sam, Just to make you feel a little better, I spent 2 years searching for the birth and marriage of my great grandfather William Brown. I finally found his marriage a couple of months ago, I kept finding an entry for Jane Watson (his wife)I ordered the certificate and it turns out he was actually born William Cogger!! I'm sure there are a lot more people who changed their name. happy hunting. Doreen

Hi Ann, I have also seen the Amison's in Longton as they have an Eliza/Elizabeth of about the correct age so I'm beginning to wonder if she actually knew where she was born! I found her marriage record in the parish records in the Archives on Tuesday so now have her father's name to help me find them - fingers crossed! Sam x

Don't know whether this helps, but I've done quite a bit of research on a family in Longton area of Staffs (and they're almost as difficult as yours!), and have noticed that the surname AMISON was quite common in those parts.

Kath, thanks but loads of people on here have already looked for Milsburgh, no-one has found it but the general opinion seems to be that it should be Middlesborough? I suppose I should count myself lucky really, all the rest of my family (touch wood) have been fairly easy to trace so I can't really complain! It's just so frustrating! Sam x

Hi Sam I tried to help on the Records Office board - I was refering to the orginal hand written census records - here's hoping they are legable! Don't give up - it will fall into place one day. Try another branch to take your mind off this one!! I also have a chap I can't find where he was born although suggestions have been made. He was registered as 'Royal Artillary' on both marriage and his sons birth certs, but that doesn't help me!!!! Keep Smilling !! :))))))))))) J

Is the Milsburgh, Yorkshire place of birth on a census on Ancestry that we can look at to see if it looks any different, or does it definitely look like Milsburgh? Kath. x p.s. I don't think I want to swap families, thanks all the same !!!

I'm tearing my hair out with this family, any one want them? 1) GGreat grandmother gives her place of birth as Milsburg, Yorkshire which doesn't exist. 2) Same woman gives surname as Amson on marriage cert, Emason on eldest son's birth cert and Amison on younger son's birth cert. Haven't found her birth yet because a) I don't know the correct surname and b) don't know where she was born. 3) GGreat grandfather (husband of above) gives place of birth as Manchester/Oakenshaw, Lancashire/Hanley, Staffordshire depending which census you look at. 4) 1881 census has GGreat Grandfather living with his parents, no sign of the former Ms Amson/Emason/Amison even though they were married by now. Their son is listed as being the son of head of household who is 56 with a 55 year old 'daughter'. With them is another son called George. 5) 1871 census, my GG Granfather is missing, George is now the nephew of the head, not the son. 6) Tried to find them in 1851 but wife and eldest son's names differ slightly so don't know if they are right family or not! Grrrr, I've had enough! Someone must have a worse family, please tell me about it and make me feel better! Actually, feel slightly better now I've got it all off my chest! Sam x
