lol, older relatives are terrible like that. my dad isn't even very old (he's 60 this year) and when i found a new cousin who was my nana's great great niece - dad replied - oh yeah i remember that! was worse when i finally tracked down his cousin (from his dad's side who he didn't know very well at all), who was deceased - but his son was alive - dad was always adament that his uncle ernie never had children when in fact he did!! always keep it in mind, relatives have a funny way of going 'oh yeah, i remember that' after you've done all the hard work trying to find it out! Might be that they didn't marry until after 1901 - Surname First name(s) District Vol Page ---------------------------- Marriages Sep 1904 ------------------------- Alcock Herbert Henry Lambeth 1d 868 COOK Mary Ann Lambeth 1d 868 Hunneman John Blaydon Lambeth 1d 868 Legge Florence Lambeth 1d 868 If that is the family - then this is them on the 1871 which hopefully gives Mary's maiden name too! This fits (with sister called Matilda - even though it might have been her mother's name - relatives do get things wrong, my mum thought that my g grandmother on my dad's side was from Newcastle but she was from London). Also fits with her father being deceased at the time of her marriage. Well that's a bit of a stretch - London or Ireland?? And if you're unsure on those, she could be from anywhere! Still trying to have a look for you, but if you're not entirely sure then it'll prove difficult with such a common name. What makes you think she might have been Irish? Chloe

McDitzy Report 5 Jul 2005 17:27

Does the 1901 entry not have James down as her father, then? Sorry, I couldn't see that one - can't get into Ancestry at work. I can't find a marriage between a James Cook and a Matilda Maud ?? either. Still trying to help! Do you know if she was from London?? Chloe

McDitzy Report 5 Jul 2005 15:44

Perhaps she was Matilda Maud, but they (Edith's parents) may have had a child and called her Matilda Maud, after her mother. When it comes to ancestors - they send us around in circles! Just never assume things - it's that that gets you into trouble and tracing the wrong tree for years (I've done it!!) Chloe x Am at work at the mo so can't look too much for you, but will try and look some more when I get home.

McDitzy Report 5 Jul 2005 15:34

Did Edith live in London too? There's a birth for a MAtilda Maud Cook in Lambeth in 1893. Could be a sister - it is possible that her mother was a witness at the wedding, but don't assume that it was. Chloe Births Dec 1893 --------------- Cook Matilda Maud Lambeth 1d 413

Don't put yourself down, Stephanie! How do you know it was Edith's mother who was a witness and not her sister or another Cook relation?? The Cooks will be harder to find than the other side, because there are so many to choose from! Sarah

It's best if you post everything to this thread, rather than personal message - that way all can read it! Your message to me read: ''wedding was parish church stockwell james cook was stonemason james henry lay was carpenter'' Thanks for the names. When you say, James Henry Lay, are you talking about the groom, or was his father named the same? Sorry, but could you tell me where Stockwell is please? Is it the place near Lambeth, Surrey?? Re the Lays: If it's James father who was the carpenter and they both had the same name, then this family looks very likely in 1901. The dad is a carpenter: James Lay abt 1860 Bermondsey, London, England Head Camberwell London James Lay abt 1886 Wells, London, England Son Camberwell London Miriam Lay abt 1869 Woolwich, London, England Wife Camberwell London You mentioned that Edith Florence Cook's mother was called Matilda Maude Cook (nee ??). Do you know if she would have definitely been alive in 1901? Sarah

Please could you let us know their ages from the cert, also father's names and occupations (and if recorded dec'd) and where abouts in the country you might expect the couple to be from (or where the marriage took place, in any case!!) Sarah
