I have a whole family (5 so far) born in Edinburgh c1826 onwards - have found them via marriages and deaths but births hadn't been registered.

Tracy, I've been trying to trace some Scottish folk and had a break-through at the weekend. Scotlands People had the middle name down as the first name on their search, although once I viewed the search result it showed the first & middle names in the right order, and the image was the same. So if you have a middle name try that as the first name Josie

If your local LDS family history centre does'nt have them in, I know they will order it for you, but I think they charge a small fee. Liz

Thanks Margaret. I'll try it for Thomas Redhead. Think I'll have to wait a while for my Liversedges though.

Tracy, I have just posted a thread about finding early records in Scotland. It may not be too much help right now because you are unsure of the area, but it may come in handy at a later date.

Goodness, I didn't think they were there then lol Thank you so much Liz :) Any ideas where I can see the census images? Least I know he wasn't lying when he said he was born there lol

Hi Tracy, I've found your Redheads in 1851 names index for Glasgow. This index does'nt have birth places listed, so you would need to view actual census. Census taken TRADESTON Ward 623 Enum dist 32 page 2 Thomas Redhead age 29 Elizabeth age 32 Mary A age 8 Sarah D age 6 William age 3 Elizabeth J age 1 Cheers Liz

I guess it's possible Janet. I actually hadn't thought of that. I know it's not on the IGI, or I would have found it by now. Guess I'll have to wait till I can get access to some English Parish records.

Janet 693215 Report 1 Aug 2005 16:15

If the family was C of E they may have waited till return to England for the baptisms? Just a thought.

Anne, I'm looking in the Old Parish Records on ScotlandsPeople, not in the Civil Registration entries :) They should have a baptism _somewhere_.

Anne

Anne Report 1 Aug 2005 16:01

Official registration didn't happen in Scotland till 1855 so you won't find anything in births before then on Scotlands People. Sorry if this is blindingly obvious! I thought you might be looking in deaths, with those as the birth years, but then you said they moved back to England. Good luck anyway, Anne

Val, I've tried Soundex, wildcards, just the surname, no areas, with areas. Everything. I still can't find them.

Val

Val Report 1 Aug 2005 14:51

Maybe the name was wrote down wrong as the used to write them the way they sounded and other good idea don't put area in as it might be different as well
