How do I find out my mother's maiden name from my original birth certificate. I was adopted soon after birth and only have my adopted certificate. My mother was married at the time of my birth and that is the only name I have for her |

Hi Joanne how long after you were born were you adopted ?? If it was near enough straight away then maybe your birth mum wasnt able to register you under the name she wanted to call you. So the adoptive parents did this and this is the certificate you have now. There must be a record of your adoption with your birth mothers signature giving concent for the other people to adopt you. I think it is social services who you contact in the area you were born and they start the ball rolling to find your Adoption papers but it may take a while. Are you adoptive parents still living, i know its a sensative subject but maybe they or a family member knows her name. You need to have alook on the 1837 online at marriages a few years before you were born with the surname of the father you know married your birth mum and the area you were born in. Regards Colette xx |

If you know the name you were given at birth and the distrctyou should be able to find your original birth entry in the birth index, this will also give you the GRO reference to order the certificaye. |
