If you know your grandma remarried, you should be able to find her 2nd marriage cert. This will state whether or not she was a widow - ie whether or not your grandfather was still alive. Without any other clues, I think you will just have to go through the GRO indexes looking for someone of the right age. Hope his name wasn't Smith! nell

He didnt die between 1984 and 2003 if that birthdate is correct

The Ego

The Ego Report 22 Aug 2005 23:10

You would have to check every year between last known sighting and 1984....thats quite a few credits on 1837.........it would probably be worth checking backwards from 1984.

Samian590 Report 22 Aug 2005 23:15

You dont know what happened to him-you must be methodical and make sure he hasnt died in this country first. Ive checked the local area of Cheshire 1940-1960-no deaths except someone called alfred leslie vere pugh, aged 27 in 1940. Nothing so far 1970-1983.

If you don't want to pay to do this online, you can go to a main library that holds the birth, marriage and death indexes and search them for free. Janice

The Ego Report 22 Aug 2005 23:39

Does he have a middle name I have given you a head start Have checked all deaths 1970 to 2003=nothing Cheshire 1940-1960=nothing You need to check on 1837 online or do it manually in a library by checking each quarter of each year up to 1970. If still nothing Hes either still alive or went to another country, most probably USA,OZ ,CANADA or NZ. Thats another world altogether. Free white page directories are about for these countries, but without declared age, youre up against it. If theres a chance he settled in a particular county here, you could get lucky.cambridge have a free data base for records on the net-very quick-its called CAMDEX. There are 9 Alfred Pughs living in this country that could be him.The other 8 listed have a date of birth listed aswell-all dont match. One of these shortlisted is in Liverpool, not far from Ellesmere Port.
