Hello again Judy I tried to go to Run and typed in msconfig and got a message 'file not found'!! Am I in big trouble?? I did the thing with icons and now I only have aol, which I use, the Norton stuff and the volume, graphics etc. icons. Would it be worth a try disabling GO -Back to try to install the scanner? I am getting ready to open the window!!! Thanks for your invaluable help. Margaret.

Hi Judy I am in Sacramento CA (and you?) I went to the Microsoft site...that's why I have not replied to you before...got a bit involved with all the different updates and interesting bits on there. (I DID find a driver that will run Magic School Bus at the Ocean, which explains why my granddaughter has not been able to play that one!) There are no drivers for my scanner (I went to the scanner site and they say my scanner is too old for any support etc to be offered.) It has been working just fine up till now, I moved my computer to a new console I put together and so I had to unplug everything. After I replugged everything in it all worked except the scanner, hence my problem. Do you think I need to take Norton off while I install the scanner? Thanks Judy, you are a find!!! Rgds Margaret.

Margaret: I just saw your note about running Windows 2000. I don't recall off the top of my head, but one of the Windows version doesn't come up with a START UP MENU - I think it may be 2000. If that's the case you may have to open up the programs that have icons showing in the icon tray - the ones you don't want running - and see if there is an option for having it not start up. I know, for example, that Quicktime has an option that you have to check off to prevent it from automatically starting up. Another option is to place your mouse over the icon in the icon tray and RIGHT click on it - there will be an option there to turn it off. Doing it this way, though, only turns the program off until you either turn it back on by using it or until you restart your PC - in which case you'll note the icon is back showing in your icon tray. At least this way you can temporarily free up memory space while on your PC. Judy

Oooops, almost forgot, Margaret: To check and see what is starting up when you turn on your PC: 1. Click on START. 2. Click on RUN. 3. Type in: msconfig and click on OK. 4. A box will appear with labeled tabs, click on STARTUP. Here you will be able to see what programs are starting up (and will continue to run while the PC is on.) Uncheck any programs that you don't use. Some of those would be, for instance, your printer, digital camera, MSN chat, AOL, Quicktime, any games, etc.) You DON'T want to uncheck anything related to anti-spyware or anti-viruses - you want those running. You also don't want to uncheck anything that your PC needs to start. If in doubt as to what something is: DO NOT UNCHECK IT. Judy :o)

Hi Margaret! Where about are you in the states? As for the ongoing printer problem the next thing I would do is to go to the Microsoft Update site and check and see if there are any available drivers the site suggests you download and install. If there are none at this site go to the manufacture's site (of your printer....you can usually find the site by Googling the manufacturer's name.) At the printer's site there will be a link for you to check and see if there are new drivers available for your particular printer......if you need help navigating the site to find this area let me know the make and model of your printer and I'll check for you. Often, as technology moves forward on the internet, your equipment becomes outdated.....manufacturers, as well as Microsoft, makes the updates available for you to keep up. Judy

Good morning Judy THANKS for your reply to my problem. I have tried to do Add Hardware as you suggested but that does not seem to work. Perhaps I do need to do something about the programmes running in the background. I have Norton and it seems to have a couple of icons, including Ghost and anti-virus. I also have aol computer checkup there (I don't even know how that got there) showing. The other icons seem to be graphics etc. If you could 'walk me through' I would really appreciate it. Valerie: The icons you mention are all fine to have running and should be running. As for anti-virus and anti-spyware you should have one program for each.....You mention Microsoft and I assume you mean Microsoft's Anti-Spyware program. That's an excellent program for spyware. You do, however, need another program to protect your PC from viruses. Anti-spyware and anti-virus programs treat two different things....both spyware and viruses can be equally damaging to your PC. If you don't have an anti-virus may I suggest AVG - a free anti-virus program you can get online. (They also have a version that you can pay for. Personally, I prefer Norton as with anything free you often get what you pay for.....AVG free version works, and many never encounter problems with it.) At any rate, if you're unprotected, download AVG and install it until you decide whether you want to keep it or use something else - don't leave yourself vunerable to viruses. http://free.grisoft(.)com/doc/1 Once you've installed it scan your PC to make sure there are no existing viruses. isnt there a slider that opens up more space in settings part of the general section of internet options? It says ' Amount of disk space to use'-mines set very low at the moment.

I am running W2000 and Outlook is reporting an 0x8004210A error (time-out). Outlook Express seems OK. Could it be connected with the fact that I have Microsoft Update installed which seems to have downloaded Office XP SP3 and KB832668 V2 (XP Alternative User Input Update) updates, both of which seem to be XP items, not W2000? There does not seem to be an uninstall option for those updates. I have Panda Internet Security and on searching the web it may be that there is a conflict with that, but the fix involves editing the Registry, which I am reluctant to do.

Margaret: Since you've uninstalled the scanner it could be that you just now have to get the PC to recognize your 'new' hardware: 1. Click on START. 2. Click on CONTROL PANEL. 3. From the list, click on ADD HARDWARE. 4. A HARDWARE WIZARD box will appear - just follow the prompts. Make sure, too, that all your cords are connected tightly in the slots in the back of your PC as well as the one leading into your scanner. Restart your PC after the wizard if it didn't recognize the new hardware right away. Judy As for low memory, it could be that you have to many programs that you are not using but are starting up when you start your PC. This leaves unused programs running in the background using system resources which may have caused your memory problem. What Windows version are you using (XP, 98, ME, etc...)? Do you have a lot of icons showing in your icon tray? The icon tray is at the bottom, right hand corner of your screen. If there are a lot of icons they need to be turned off in your START UP MENU. I can walk you through that.....

Hello I wanted to add some photos and found my scanner wouldn't work. I uninstalled it and went to reinstall and now it says my computer is 'low on memory'. Since I have uninstalled all the extra non essential programmes I had, and my system says memory is ok, can anyone tell me what is wrong...and most important..what to do about it? I would be eternally grateful..(otherwise this computer may go sailing out the window some time soon!!!) Thanks anyone with any ideas. yours in extreme frustration Margaret.
