Thanks Judith for clearing that up for me. I just get a little confused sometimes and have been sat here all day trying to work it out. I suppose somethings we can never get to the bottom of or prove.

As Peter has already said this birth took place before Civil Registration so there was no register office. The IGI entry names the parish not a 'records' office. Baptism would normally take place in the parish church of the place where the family were living at the time, or possibly in mother's home parish for a first child if she went home to mum for the birth. IF the enumerator got it right and rounded ages down then that Benjamin listed living in Exhall in 1841 aged 30 could have been aged anywhere from 30 to 34 and so born between 1806 and 1811

I see what you are saying Jim, thanks. I suppose there is no way of knowing which Benjamin is mine then or which one is the son of Benjamin Harvey and Sarah Bush

Either of these could be the 1814 christening 1841 Benjamin Harvey abt 1811 Warwickshire, England Exhall Warwickshire Benjamin Harvey abt 1816 Warwickshire, England Mancetter Warwickshire

I am confused now! Exhall and Bedworth are close to each other and I think both would have used Nuneaton as their records office.

Ages on the 1841 census are rounded down to the closest 5 so an age of 30 could actually be anything from 30-34 making the birth year anything from 1811-1815.

Thank you all for your replies. I must have missed the marriage entry, so thank you for that as well. Do you suppose that the Benjamin born 1811 (according to the 1841 census) is the same one recorded as being baptised in 1814? How accurate are the 1841 census birth years do you think? Many thanks

Judith

Judith Report 25 Jul 2007 18:12

But 1on 841 census ages of adults were supposed to be rounded down to nearest multiple of 5 and birth places were not stated just whether born in county.

It is too early for a birth certificate but you can find him on the IGI His Baptism is shown as 10 MAY 1814 Nuneaton, Warwick, England. His parents marriage is also recorded, 16 AUG 1813 Bedworth, Warwick, England and his mother was Sarah Bush. Both records are shown as extracts from the Parish Registers so are more likely to be correct.

According to the census record for 1841 Benjamin was born 1811 in Exhall in the hundred of Coventry in Warwickshire

Hi Judith, Yes, sorry Exhall is somewhere in between Coventry and Nuneaton, so I am not sure where it would be registered. Both Coventry and Nuneaton are in Warwickshire, I have checked the IGI and found a baptism for Benjamin Harvey in 1814 in Nuneaton, parents Benjamin Harvey and Sarah. But I also think there was a Benjamin Harvey born in 1810 (thats the birth year on the census return). I am trying to establish if the two Benjamins are in fact the same person.

There is only one entry on www.familysearch.org to a christening on 10 May 1814 in Nuneaton - parents names match. Sorry don't know where Exhall is. You will find the entry by going to www.familysearch.org, clicking on Search tab and entering the details. Helen

It would help if you told us where Exhall is? Also where have you looked already - guess you will already have searched for this baptism on the IGI on the Family Search site seeing as that is free to search.

Good evening, I am looking for the birth of a Benjamin Harvey born between 1810 and 1815 in Exhall. Parents were Benjamin Harvey and Sarah. I am interested to find the maiden name of Sarah and I am hoping there was only one Benjamin Harvey born between those dates. Thank you in anticipation of your reply. Helen
