The 1871 Jeanette posted is the one I saw when Sam was a sapper and unmarried. What date was his marriage? Yep, Im just wondering if Sam upgraded dads job - though its quite imaginative isnt it - perhaps he dosed horses and gelded them on the side! Then again, a vet would have had the dosh for a commission for Samuel I would have thought??

What about looking for Henry in 1841/51 as Harry as lots were called that. Jeanette

Hi Heather, I saw them on a census in cornwall as well. I am wondering how Henry went from being a vet in 1877 to a ag labourer. I have Samuel on all the census reports through to 1901 (he died in 1905) It is just Henry that was puzzling me as to where he was in 1841/51.

Well the sam at Aldershot was from Chelmsford too. So it seems possible dad was in the army?

Hi, Samuel was in the Army and he was a Sapper, Royal Engineer but I think in 71 he was based at Shoebury barracks.

Hi, I have tried to get his birth cert but I can't find a record, tried all the usual places including 1837 but no luck. Samuel Stevens married in South Shoebury to Adelaide Turner in 1877. I have Samuel on all the census reports from 1861 - 1901 but to get further back I need to find details on his parents. All I have is his fathers name and occupation. I can't even find a death record for Henry as I don't know where he was living. Thankyou once again.

What was Sams Job? I just found a 33 Sam Stevens working as a Royal Engineer in Aldershot in 1871. If thats the right guy, we may be looking for an ARMY vet. Chelmsford would be right for that too.

When/ where did he marry and what was wifes name?

Heather

Heather Report 8 Sep 2005 09:59

A vet was a high class job, have you checked any sites for Veterinary Surgeons? A vet became a pillar of the local community, so he is unlikely to have moved around much. Where did the son marry? Can you find his birth cert to get mums name aswell? Have you checked any directories for the area in which the father may have worked?

I am desperate for some help. I am trying to find Samuel Stevens born 1837 in Chelsmford Essex. Some very kind people on here have looked at the 1841/51 essex census but he can not be found although there is a Samuel Stevens on them it is the wrong one. On his marriage certificate it says his father is Henry Stevens and that he was a veterinary surgeon. I have no details of his mother or siblings or even where his father was born. If anyone can help me I would be so grateful. Thanking you for your time.
