Suzanne, hiya. Theres no such thing cheap, in ordering certs. They are all £7 but the only difference is the time that you get them back, two examples of the good and the bad. The good GRO SOUTHPORT 2/3 days. The bad LPOOL RO, 8 maybe 9 weeks, somtimes longer. I sent off the 5 certs, all marriage to GRO SOUTHPORT 2 weeks ago. Within 3 working days I had got them back, and the cost £35. now you might say that isnt much BUT, and theres always a BUT, that was only £8 less that my wife gets as an senior citizen pension. Makes you think doesnt it. Oh yea she worked all her life, BRINGING UP 3 LOVELY GIRLS. ted.

Bob The 'new cert' will be a handwritten copy of the original entry, and if the original entry is badly written, ther's no guarantee that the new cert will be more accurate than the one you would have got from the GRO. In other words, you will be trying to decipher a bad copy written shortly after the original cert was made, as opposed to getting a copy someone has recently written by deciphering the original. nell

Meercat I don't think it is ILLEGAL - as long as you are not selling them. As a scan copy is very obviously not an original, it wouldn't be much use for fraudulent purposes either, so you would be in the clear there, too. Incidentally, did you know that a Certificated BMD copy is the property of the GRO (or the local Registrar) and that STRICTLY SPEAKING, if you get a wrong un you should return it to them. The very first wrong certificate I got, I tried to do this. The lady at the local office thought I was utterly barmy and said 'Oh, just tear it up, if you don't want it' Olde Crone

I have had some certs from the gro, and sometimes the quality is not good.........meaning the handwriting is hard to decipher. Would going to the registrars office result in a better quality? I rang up the camden office, and basically THEY will issue a NEW CERT for £7........ what do you reckon? Bob

Valerie, why don't you phone the registry office in the area they were registered as my local office are really helpful because they ask you for as much infomation you can give, then if the one you have ordered doesn't appear to be the right one they phone and let you know so you can cancel the order. I don't know if it is just some helpful person, or my local registry office policy but it has saved me wasted certificates. Josie

There will come a time when the information won't be certificated and will be considerably cheaper, at least for stuff in the 1800s. However, you may have to wait several years and goodness knows what the indexing will be like.

I dont suppose they are in the same area so you could go and photocopy them at the records office? My hubby still thinks they are supplied free of charge as a public service.

Well Done GRO I usually try to stagger my orders but I too was 'on a roll' couldn't resist, Joan
