Merry - if you're still around, there is a thread further up this bunched-up list called 'Bigamy/Anulled Marriage' which you might be able to help with... seem to remember you had a thread about annulments recently but I can't find it to nudge it up. Kate.

Hi Beryl, There isn't really an alternative site to Ancestry for having all the census records under one roof 1861 - 1901 and hopefully 1851 and 1841 coming soon...... Ann - is that right?? Merry

Actually I told them that lots of folk were waiting on my reply and could they make it a speedy one (lol). Didn't say what site we were all doing our griping on though. Kate :)))

Well, at least you know you did the right thing, Kate, and told them what you thought.....instead of me just griping about it on here, but DOING nothing! Here's hoping the remedy the situation. The wheel on my mouse is exhausted! Merry

To your corners please for a brief interlude.... LOL This is a reply I received from Ancestry today. 'Thank you for your email. I apologize for any inconvenience the changes have caused. Your issue has been noted and I am forwarding this to the appropriate department. We appreciate your comments and take them very seriously. Unfortunately I cannot guarantee the change will be made, but we will do all we can to make your experience with Ancestry.co.uk pleasant. Best regards .........' Suppose we'll just have to wait and see then. Kate :)

Brenda, Ah, I had forgotten about Ranked Search. What you say about Exact Search in your last post sounds as if you are in exactly the same boat as the rest of us, now that Ancestry have changed their layout!! I never use Ranked search as I cannot understand the ranking system. That's why we were at cross purposes!! Merry

Actually, I think I may have sussed part of it. I just searched for Job Smith on an EXACT search and that brings up which type of index and how many results as you described. But then viewing the 1861 Census results for him for example, still does not give me the option to zoom past the early alphabetical counties until I get to those starting with S eg, Staffordshire. This is a better way of searching. I don't think I've ever used EXACT search before as it returns so few results with the obscure names that I've put in for search. Thanks, at least now I have some extra options when searching, Brenda

Hi Merry, I searched for Job Smith on the main page and it went straight into the results with no breakdown as to which index or how many results for each, as you have shown. I have: Viewing 1-10/next>>. I cannot see how many records there are in total. I cannot jump forward through the pages, I can merely go to the next 10 entries. I can change the results per page from 10 to 20 or 50. I have no other options available to me at all. Thanks for you interest, Brenda

But Jess, yesterday you said, (and I think I quote): ''Well actually, I rather like it'' lol Merry!!!

Hi Brenda, Do you still not get any numbers then? As an example if I ask for ''Job Smith'' on the main page this is what I see next: Search Results Census Records 931 1881 England Census 203 1871 England Census 201 1891 England Census 155 1901 England Census 141 » View all 931 results Birth, Marriage, & Death Records 763 England and Wales, Civil Registration Index: 1837-1983 635 Staffordshire, England: Parish and Probate Records 38 Pallot's Marriage Index for England: 1780 - 1837 27 England and Wales, Civil Registration Death Index: 1984-2002 15 Warwickshire, England: Parish and Probate Records 7 There are other catagories underneath, but those are the main two. If I click on the first one above: 1861 England Census 209 I see the first 50 results (because I've increased my results page length to 50) and it says ''Viewing 1-50 of 209'' at the top. What do you see? Merry

Hi all, Well I've had Ancestry on subscription for about nine months and I've never been able to see how many names were in a search or zoom ahead past the ABCs etc to the PQRs. Now it seems that you've all got what I've had to put up with all this time. I've never known how many names there will be - 20 or 1020! I often thought these features would be useful but didn't know that others could do these things while I couldn't. Brenda

Have just had another look and I don't think it's us - it's them. Searched for FRED SMITH and got 1104 results. But all I can do is view a max of 50 and move to next page. Is it worth emailing them do you think? It might be just an oversight on the programmers part. Kate :) Update: Have emailed Ancestry and been promised a response within 24 hours - watch this space ...............

Thanks Kate - glad to know I'm not alone! I wonder if there's a techy expert out there who has any ideas on this? Merry

No consolation I know Merry but I had the same problem today. Knew something was different but didn't click what it was until you put it into words. Kate :)

Remember Ancestry tweeked their site the other day? BEFORE then, if I did a search on the census and got (say) 500 results, if I wished to zoom through the results to a particular point I could click a ''>>'' symbol to take me along ten pages, or I could click on page 6 of the results, or whatever. Am I correct in thinking I can't do this any more and have to view every page even if I don't wish to see any of the A's, B's or C's etc????? I have upped the number of results on a page to 50 to try and speed up the process. Is this all I can do???? GGGGGRRRRRRRRR!!! Happy Hunting (Not) - Merry xx
