That's a good idea Gwyneth I will try that. I think the registers are kept at Wakefield Archives so I will look into it. Thanks Misty :)

Thanks Peter, no unfortunately I don't know any of his siblings names. As I am sure you will all understand I don't want to assume the 1901 fam is mine. For all I know my John William might have lived in a totally different place and only moved to Castleford in 1906 when he got married! Misty :)

Approaching from another angle... You may, or may not have found the correct Samuel and family. Your new cert. relates to the family in the census. BUT Is this your family? What about looking at electoral lists early 1900s for Samuel, and later, his family. Look for him disappearing off the list and see if you can then match this with a death and burial entry. Maybe there was a notice in the paper, although I've not found any for mine but it's possible. Hopefully the informant of Samuel and Jane's deaths might take the family forward a bit and give an address which might relate to something you already know about 'your' family.

Keep breathing Alter Ego, and thanks for your help. I'm sorry if I confused you but what I need is to find a way to connect Jane and John William after the 1901 census. Misty :)

Misty, one question that hasn't been asked is do you know the names of any of John William's siblings? This would be a great help in pinpointing the correct family. This looks like a good possibility for the birth of John W Births Sep 1884 Edwards John William W. Bromwich 6b 839

I took a chance and ordered John Williams bc. It arrived this morning. It has Samuel as father and Jane Edwards late Pitt formerly Foster. So it appears that Jane married Benjamin Pitt in 1874. Found her in 1881 at west Bromwich with Children Jane, Alfred and Sarah Jane. John William was born July 1884 West Bromwich. Then found marriage for Jane Pitt and Samuel Edwards in 1885. Before I buy any more certs on this line I need to find a way to connect Jane to John William after 1901. Thankyou all for all your replies so far Misty :)

I have found the family in 1891, also in Glass Houghton. Interestingly John is listed as John W, aged 7 born in West Bromwich, so this is a good bit of extra evidence. The 1881 census has Samuel married as a boarder so the rest of the family are somewhere else.

what doesnt add up is that samuel is a boarder when he should have been a father in 1881-there are only 2 people that could be him-both boarders-so im presuming that the older kids are hers and not his.

The address on the marriage cert is the same as his wifes. Think they were living with her parents. The witnesses were Edward Wood and Emma Bairstow, don,t think they were family. John was 21 and both he and his father were miners. Do you think the electoral register would help? Or if I can find Samuels death would there have been an orbit in the local paper like nowadays? Misty :)

Who were the witnesses at John's marriage? Did Samuel sign as a witness, was he even alive? Are you sure he is the right one in 1901, - ? Do addresses match up? What was John's occupation? Age?

Is there an address on the marriage certificate? Heather

I have found a marriage for Samuel and Jane in 1885 this was Janes second marriage. The problem Is the gap between 1901 census and the marriage in 1906. I don't want to assume that is the right family only later to find out that John william moved to Castleford in 1905! If you see what I mean? So I need to try connecting them later than 1901. Thanks anyway Misty :)

It's possible that Jane was not Samuel's 1st wife. Can you follow him back through the census years and hopefully find him with John William and his mother at some point?

Bride/grooms mothers are not on marriage certs or in parish registers of weddings. Maiden names are sometimes given in baptism registers and always on birth certs of children and on their own marriage certs of course. Have you looked for a marriage between Samuel and Jane around the time of the first child's birth? nell

Hi Misty His age from marriage cert or burial would help find him on a census. Heather

Has anyone any ideas about how I can confirm who my G Gfathers mother was? My G Gfather John William Edwards married in Castleford in 1906,His father was Samuel Edwards. I have the cert. On the 1901 census I have found Samuel with wife Jane and children, Living in Glasshoughton, Castleford. Although the facts seem to fit, I don’t want to assume. Would the parish register have the grooms mothers name? Or any other ideas where I can look? Misty :)
