can anyone give me any tips, i have traced back to my gt gt gt grandfather, Thomas Storer, the 1881 census states that he was born in Saxtead Suffolk in 1812. All i can find is a marriage date in 1835 on the LDS site, but nothing about his birth, the site comes up with a similar name but not the same part of suffolk, i am going to look at the parish records for the marriage but if that doesn't give his fathers name i will be stuck, i have been in this situation since christmas and getting frustrated, any tips or advice will be extremely helpful thanks yvette

Just looked on Ancestry but they only go from 1837 and its not on there, so he must have married before that. Will look for him on 1861, you never know he may have his rellies living with him. Gloria x

Sorry Yvette, I couldn't see him, in fact I couldn't see any Storers in Suffolk at all, so perhaps it hasn't been done yet. If you know the year of birth and the place you could contact the church to see the registers. Good luck Gloria x

You don't say whether you have the census records befroe 1881 and whether he had the same wife all the time? Have you got a birth cert for one or more of his children? If yes, I presume the mother's name matches with the pre-1837 marriage? 1881 Sarah Storer abt 1815 Saxted, Suffolk, England Wife Laxfield Road, Dennington, Suffolk, England Thomas Storer abt 1812 Saxted, Suffolk, England Head Laxfield Road, Dennington, Suffolk, England 1871 Sarah Storrer abt 1816 Saxtead, Suffolk, England Wife Dennington Suffolk Sarah Storrer abt 1851 Saxtead, Suffolk, England Daughter Dennington Suffolk Thomas Storrer abt 1813 Saxtead, Suffolk, England Head Dennington Suffolk 1861 Mariama Stovern abt 1846 Saxtead, Suffolk, England Daughter Saxtead Suffolk Sarah Stovern abt 1815 Saxtead, Suffolk, England Wife Saxtead Suffolk Sarah Stovern abt 1852 Saxtead, Suffolk, England Daughter Saxtead Suffolk Thos Stovern abt 1812 Saxtead, Suffolk, England Head Saxtead Suffolk it's interesting that in 1861 he is an Ag Lab, but in 1871 a farmer of 30 acres! I wonder if he inherited something in the years between? Lunch ready....back later. Merry

thanks for all the big response, The marriage on the LDS is under the name Storey, i have birth cert of a son George, mother is Sarah Thower and Father Thomas surname Storer. Found the same as you on the 1871 census but couldnt find anything on the 1861, so your info is interesting, i think they must of had oooaar accents as every census is different, yes i agree that it is strange going from labourer to farmer, they are on the 1881 census as Storer, Thomas and Sarah retired farmer and wife. Our family name is Storer, any more info i can give just ask, doing this all alone the rest of the family think i'm mad and cant see the point although they all want to know when i find out stuff but no one to discuss with, sometimes it helps just having somelses point of view. yvette

Oh right, I see the marriage now. Pity the change from Ag Lab to Farmer (1861 => 1871) didn't come before 1858 - might have found a will for a rellie on the Nat Archives site.....but that only goes up to 1858. No Storers on FreeBMD deaths 1861-1871, but not yet complete. I just looked at the Suffolk family History website, but can't see anything to help you with this :o(( Merry

thanks chris and merry so much for your help now you can see what i am up against !

Merry

Merry Report 20 Oct 2005 14:38

You are only up against it when you find he wasn't baptised in Saxstead, Suffolk!! Can you afford £11.25? Given that Thomas is on several census returns and his dob would seem to be 1811/12ish and always says the same place, I would have thought it worthwhile to get the Suffolk CRO to do a lookup for you. £11.25 covers half an hour. If you are lucky, they might be able to get the births of Thomas and also Sarah in that time?? if you can afford longer they might find brothers and sisters for them and even parents marriages if they happened in the same parish. They might have some cross-parish marriage indexes, which would be useful if the marriages took place elsewhere. The page explaining is: http://www.suffolkcc.gov.uk/sro/application.html Merry

Pete Report 20 Oct 2005 15:20

The Suffolk Marriage Index is searchable (for a fee) on the familyhistoryonline website. Groom Thomas Story Status – from Parish Tannington Bride Sarah Thrower Status – from Parish – Married at Wilby on 12 Oct 1835 Now whether that means he was born in Tannington is another matter. Sadly, according to Hugh Wallis' IGI batch number site the parish of Tannington is not included in the IGI. So no closer to getting your answer, but another possible parish to search. Pete
