I have a rellie who is a Master of a vessel named Statesman in 1871 census, based at Yarmouth.

The National Archives site says their register of masters is 1845-1854. Is there a later register and where is it? nell

Nell There's a Mariner's Register at the Liverpool Maritime Museum...not sure what years it covers but might be worth a look http://www.liverpoolmuseums.org.uk/maritime Lou

I assume you know his name? The Guildhall in London has the Captain's register which lists all master mariners who were alive in [I think] 1861.[or 1864?] The register is indexed in alphabetical order on surname and so you can trace a master through his career. If you cannot get to Guildhall, google them for advice. wendy
