I wondered what information you wanted from the cert. In the past I have ordered a siblings cert normally one with the most unusual forenames and born as near to a census as possible. Could this be the best route for you?

Babs, I think that if you call then they will be very helpful. I have ordered a certificate from Sandwell rather than GRO when I didn't know the GRO number and it arrived PDQ. Their phone number is: Tel +44 (0)121 569 2481 If you tell then your predicament and tell them that you have a choice of 4 reference numbers but know the name of the father, I'm sure they'll advise how best to proceed. Good luck Pete

Hi, Did you know that the West Midlands BMD site has 4 William Johnson entries for 1854 West Midlands Birth indexes for the years: 1854 Surname Forename(s) Sub-District Registers At Reference JOHNSON William Harborne Sandwell HAR/13/124 JOHNSON William Wednesbury Sandwell WED/20/116 JOHNSON William Wednesbury Sandwell WED/20/87 JOHNSON William West Bromwich North East Sandwell WBNE/22/156 The reference numbers are the local numbers for ordering certificiates. This may be useful if the GRO references are hard to read. Pete
