Hi Lesley I wonder if you can check if there was a harriet Meager in 1841, I don't have access to the 41 census or the name index. If Harriet and James was not there in 1841 then maybe they were not there in 1851, although their kids were born there they may have moved away for a few years. Deb

Hi Yvonne Sorry for the delay, I was watching Shane on X facter!! I also have another James that died before 1851 so I was thinking that could be his death and the other one might still be alive. so if I can find him in this census I won't need the death cert. Also even if he is dead, Why can't I find Harriet? Deb

Debbie As Harriet/ot and daughter are the last two entries on the page I checked the next image and at the top, address 17 Whitehorse road, is Freanie (Francis?} Chapman, grandson, 8, born somewhere illegible, and Sarah Ann Burns, lodger, unm, 27, looks like dress & mantle maker. Her birthplace similarly undecipherable. nell **!!!&!£$! I've just checked and it is 1861. Poo! I was feeling really pleased with myself.

Hi Nell I think that was the 61 census which I already have, it's the 51 I need. Yvonne the marriage you have is for a James Meager and Sarah Spoll. Debbie

She is living at 17 Osborn Place, Whitehorse Road with her daughter Mary Louisa Chapman. They are both widowed and have the same occupation, which I can't decipher. And she says very clearly she was born in Middx Christchurch, which has me intrigued. Can you access this or would you like me to send you the image? nell

Hi Everyone, I think this could be a transcription error so I may need to go through all the pages one by one! I think there is about 15 enumeration districts in Croydon, each with about 50 pages so if I start now I might be finished by next Xmas. Debbie

Debbie It might help if you could find James' death cert. That would at least give an address when he died, and it would also have his age, so you could look for him more precisely. nell ps I know the Swan & Sugarloaf in Croydon, I used to go past it on the bus every day when I was a gel!

Yes, but Christchurch in Southwark would be Surrey and I still think its a parish name as opposed to a place name. There are various towns/villages called Christchurch, but none in the London area as far as I'm aware. nell

Hi Nell The Meager's you found are not mine, most of mine were born and bread in Norwood/Croydon, Surrey, and as far as I can tell none came from Ireland. The reason why I'm looking for these Meager's is-I seem to have to many James Meager's!! so I am hoping that if this one is in the 1851 census I will find out where he came from and put him in the right place in my tree!! ( that's if he is my ancestor!) Deb
