I would start with the last name. Where are you looking? Which year? Do you want me to try too?

If you put Rob* it will find Robinson, and any possible barrells. You should do that for the 2nd part as well, just incase it's like the birth record.

I can't seem to find him, Sorry. The birth certificate would give his parent's names. Maybe we could then find them.

That image looks good Maureen. Freebmd have a marriage possible for John, with an R as an initial. ... Wonder if he was a Robinson, too.

Just adding this because it might help others who open this thread because of the title...... Many people ''became'' double-barrelled during the Edwardian era when it was increasingly fashionable. Of the people on my tree who are double-barrelled, some with a hyphen and some without, not one was recorded this way at birth, if that birth was before around 1900!! Hope this helps a bit...... Merry

Sal in Sydney Report 15 Nov 2005 09:45

Thanks for that Merry....so did your just use the first part of the hyphenated name? Sal

............. And then there are the names that are NOT double barrelled but someone thinks they should be! I searched for ages for a marriage c. 1900 for a Henry BELCHAMBER. Eventually I found it and bought it. He was logged as Henry Bell Chamber, son of William Chamber.... .... No he wasn't!

Like that Gwyneth! Sal - My lot were generally reg for birth under the last surname. Some had the other surname as a second Christian name and others had no other names, but pulled their mother's maiden name (or the cat's auntie's name, or whatever) out of a hat when they married!! One goes from William Clark (difficult to trace!) to William Lyon-Clark (easy!! - extra bit is his grandmother's maiden name) and another goes from Rupert Buck to Rupert Cromey-Buck (with addition of his mum's maiden name). In Victorian times having two surnames (one as a middle name - not double-barrelled) was seen as a sign of illegitimacy (the middle name being your bio-father's surname), but in Edwardian England I think they must have forgotten about this ''stigma'' !!
