Paul Report 20 Nov 2005 12:49

I am trying to locate details of a Ambrose Alexander, born 05/03/1915 in Northumberland - possibly Jarrow. He married a Winifred Ramsay Hall and later died in 1975. Can anyone find any trace of him, ancestry is throwing up nothing

Ancestry won't throw up anything. a) its bmd stop at 1910 and then start again after 1984. b) no census is available after 1901. You would need to check the GRO indexes to find his birth, marriage and death, and assuming he stayed in the same area, possibly info in electoral rolls, though without an address this would be hard to find. Have you got any idea what he was doing during WW2 - possibly his war records will have some information of use, but you do have to pay and wait for them. nell

I have just found out that he ws born in Hebburn and not Jarrow - probably falls under South Shields. We know he was in the Army and a few of the countries he served in but nothing else. FreeBMD is not giving us his death certificare either which is strange.

Ok i have just found the birth and death, and printed copies out. On the birth section it is hard to distinguish the Mothers Maiden name, possibly Alderslade, Alderslede etc. What are my options to progress from here?

Paul Options are:- 1. Apply for his Birth Certificate - Will give you exact date/place of birth, Mother's Maiden name, Father's Name and occupation. 2. Find Marriage Certificate for parents - Will give you exact date/place, Names and occupations of Bride and Groom's fathers. Joy

Hi, I have just received the birth certificate for Ambrose Edmund Alexander. He was born 05/03/1915, his Father was John Thomas Alexander (Ship Painter), and his Mother was Elizabeth Featonby Alexander (Formerly Alderslade). I have searched on ancestry for John Thomas Alexander and have came up with 3 possibilities. I have tried to narrow this down by searching for his Elizabeth Featonby Alexander but it is throwing up over 1000 results, most of which only have the same surname. Can anyone track either of these people down? Is there any way to do a more specific search to bring up less results?

Paul You need to look for the mother under her maiden name - not her married name - you need to find their marriage - and the only way is hard slog unfortunately. Start with the quarter before his birth and work backwards on 1837 or Family Rellies and you should be able to find it - order the cert and it will give you both their fathers (hopefully!!!) - then you should, with luck, be able to find them on the 1901. Sorry, nothing in this hobby is ever easy !!!! Regards Looby

Paul think this might be a short trail - only one Elizabeth Alderslade on the 1901, an adopted child, but, I think, the right area - so don't know who the other people with her are, - think you might have to try and find her birth and go from there. View Record Name Estimated Birth Year Birthplace Relationship Civil Parish County/Island View Image View Record Elizabeth Alderslade abt 1887 Castle Eden, Durham, England Adopted Child Hebburn Durham View Record Alice Featonby abt 1842 Thornley, Durham, England Head Hebburn Durham View Record Ann Featonby abt 1867 Haswell, Durham, England Daughter Hebburn Durham View Record George Featonby abt 1876 Castle Eden, Durham, England Son Hebburn Durham Paul - she's also shown with the same family on th 1891 - just having a look for her parents deaths at the moment for you. Paul Possible death's for Elizabeth's parents if they were in Co. Durham (as it has to be after 1887 and before she appears as Fentonby on the 1891 it does narrow it down a bit!!) View Record Name Year Quarter Record Type District County View Record Alderslade, Caroline 1891 June Deaths Middlesbrough (1875-1968) Co. Durham North Riding of Yorkshire View Record Alderslade, Ernest Henry 1889 December Deaths Middlesbrough (1875-1968) Co. Durham North Riding of Yorkshire View Record Alderslade, George 1890 December Deaths Hartlepool (1859-1938) Co. Durham Will see if I can see her birth. Looby Paul - this is the only birth for an Elizabeth I can come up with between 1880 and 1900: View Record Name Year Quarter Record Type District County View Record Alderslade, Elizabeth 1892 March Births Durham (1837-1938) Co. Durham Doesn't quite seem to fit, think you'll have to have a good search on this one. Good luck Looby

Paul I think this may be Elizabeths birth.... Births Sep 1886 Alderslade Elizabeth T Easington 10a 424 Georgina.

Paul Report 25 Nov 2005 11:49

I came across that entry as well but the 'T' put me off as I am presuming she had no middle name and took on the middle name later (her middle name being the surname of the family who adopted her - if the previous listing is correct)
