Almost more frustrating than the 5 pages of David Browns, I only have one and he is through marriage, is that if history repeats its self, I will get several e-mails saying things like. 'My gran married a David Brown, is yours the same?' or 'My cousin was a David Brown do you think they may be related?' Since my David Brown was 1732 its not really likely!!!

Last time I looked, I had a horrifying 15 pages of Hot matches ...I opened one or two and then gave up. I am not a computer programmer, but would it be too difficult to build in a facility to refine the Hot Matches down a bit? I have every person called BELL who appears on this Site, and it would be useful to be able to at least sort them into date order, or by first name. Olde Crone

Sue Report 7 Dec 2005 18:56

This is my first lot of hot matches in ages. Its seems like they are updated every 6-8weeks,not every 14 days. Sue

Merry

Merry Report 7 Dec 2005 18:41

If they are updated every 14 days, how come I have had no new hot matches since about 10th Sept?? Has anyone else not had any? Merry

There were more than 7000 new Browns added to genesreunited in the last 14 days. Surely Hot Matches isn'tgoing to keep up with the newly generated hits. Even if it does somehow manage to, then I'll just have to eventually wade through the Coopers, Halls, Harrises, Knights.... all the common surnames. The one good thing about the algorithm is that when someone has entered more than one relative, they appear at the top of the list. What are the odds of a single name hit being an actual match anyway? GR could increase the usefulness of Hot Matches just by eliminating all the single hits. At least we'd see a surname other than Brown for a change.

Susan, they update each person's hot matches separately as far as I know, so not everybody's will be done at the same time. This is the reply I received from them a while ago when I asked them when the Hot Matches system was going to work properly: Thanks for your email. Hot matches looks at each individual in your tree, then it goes through the database and brings back to first 100 matches with these people. This page will refresh every 14 days bringing you the next 100 matches. . As you have a large tree then it is more than likely that the first 100 matches will only equal the first letter of the alphabet. We set the limit to 100 matches as any more can be quite overwhelming. I hope this helps. Regards Erica So as far as they are concerned, it doesn't need fixing! Perhaps a few more members should contact them and point out the faults with it so they review it. It is a complete waste of time as far as I am concerned because all I get is William Browns born anywhere in the world. Kate. P.S. As for 'it's all computer generated and we have to put up with it', certainly not! Somebody specified what the system would do, and they can also specify changes to it!

Think yourself lucky, I have a tree with nearly two thousand names on GR. I got all the BROWN names yesterday! My finger ached after all that deleting. I DID find some matches, but not on anyone major, I'd already found those matches myself. This system needs refining - otherwise it just p****es people off. Cheers, Horatia

Dave the Tyke

Dave the Tyke Report 7 Dec 2005 09:11

Not only that but if you have a big tree, because they are done in batches of 100, then only a few letters get done at a time. That means that someone who has many matches is not going to know the full extent of matches, until the end of the alphabet is reached. In other words the matches themselves are accumulative. regards Dave

Morning, Susan. Mine haven't been updated yet. Like you I trawled through pages of people last time who were not even in the right half of the world and deleted them all. I guess I will have to do it all again soon!! Some consideration should be given at least to only matching people born in the right country.

Sue Report 7 Dec 2005 08:45

Hi, I see that Hot matches have been updated..... After spending hours the other day discarding unwanted matches i now have another 6 pages to trawl through, how annoying is this why do these insist on putting everybody with the same names in your tree in your hot matches??Why dont they take into consideration were the matches come from and see if they match what you have in your tree. I suppose its all computer genarated and we have to put up with it, Sue
