Jeanette, The birth certificate does give the mother as Sarah Boore, if the marriage in 1868 turns out to show (something) boore do you think that is strong enough to go on? All your advice appreciated Paul

Jeanette Report 11 Dec 2005 22:13

I think I would get fathers wedding cert but that would be £7 wasted if wrong. Its just wierd they seem to vanish after 1871 just thought on Stephen's birth cert what has it got for his mum's maiden name? bet its not Boore of if it is send for cert then you will get his fathers name and hers. Was he still in the same general area between thecensus date & when he got married. Have you his birth cert ,or his marriage cert as this will give you his dads name. If you have his birth cert then you will have parents name & i would try looking for them mistranscribed on the 1881 census first then on the 1901. you could try the address search on 1901 with the address from his marriage cert,he may still be a that address then. Was he a seaman? Army? Try changing the order of the name, i.e. first name last, as there are sometimes transcription errors. It's a process of elimination, really. Search on the surname and narrow it down by using year of birth. Any possibles, check the original image, as the transcription might be very different from the original. He'll be there somewhere! Paul Report 11 Dec 2005 19:31

Hi, I have found someone in the 1871 cencus (my G.Grandfather) the only problem is that there seems to be no sign of him in any other census. I know he was alive in 1904 as he got married and in 1935 when he was witness to his daughters death. I have tried all sorts of spellings and I just don't understand why I cant find him! Any advice/tips very much appreciated! Paul ----- --------------- UPDATED --------------- ------- Thanks for the help..i really didn't expect any! I have spent days (if not weeks) searching for him and the rest of the family without any joy. I haven't been doing this for long but am pretty confident that I have followed all the obvious routes. His birth certificate shows him as Stephen Edward Diwell and was born on 17 july 1870. In the 1871 census he is shown as Stephen Divall (note the different spelling) born 1870 Newington, Surrey. If anyone can find him it might just prove to my wife that this is not impossible! Best Regards, Paul
