Vicki You are welcome. There are several Jewitt & Waterhouse entries on the IGI that aren't in your Bible, but which might fit in somewhere. nell

Liz, Rachel Seaton is definitely a maiden name - I have her living with her parents (also Seatons). Hmmmm.... Thanks, Vicki.

Can't find Maria Jewitt or Waterhouse on familysearch. But Eastrington is in Howden reg district and this is possibly a relative, though much later: Jewitt, Maria Record Type: Marriages Quarter: June Year: 1903 District: Howden County: East Riding of Yorkshire Volume: 9d Page: 169

Just musing on the possibilities: Maybe Rachel was also previously married and Jewitt her maiden name. Maria Jewitt, Rachel's unmarried sister had a child by an unknown man, and Joseph and Rachel took the child in until Maria was able to provide a home herself. Only a guess though. Liz

Dizzy Lizzy 205090 Report 20 Dec 2005 17:06

If I have understood it correctly, Joseph married his second wife Rachel in Feb 1846. Edward Jewitt wasn't born until Dec 1846 so Joseph and Maria Jewitt could not have married. That is supposing Joseph is the father. It would have been most odd if he had impregnated Maria shortly after his marriage to Rachel, and then taken the child to live with him and his wife as nephew. But it is possible I suppose... Liz

Thanks for your help ladies, these are definitely my Waterhouses though I still cannot figure where Maria Jewitt fits in unless, as you say, they had a child (Edward) who was illegitimate. However, I would have thought that if Joseph's first wife (Maria Kay) had died and Maria Jewitt was single that they would have been forced to get married? Does anyone have any experience of this happening? Such scandal!!! ;-) Thanks, V.

1861: Edmund Hudson abt 1822 Scarboro, Yorkshire, England Head Scarborough Yorkshire Maria Hudson abt 1821 Blacktoft Grange, Yorkshire, England Wife Scarborough Yorkshire Mary Hudson abt 1797 Whitby, Yorkshire, England Mother Scarborough Yorkshire Edward W Jewitt abt 1847 Hull, Yorkshire, England Stepson Scarborough Yorkshire Marriage record: Edmund Hudson and Maria Jewitt Dec Qtr 1854 in Sculcoates Yorkshire 1851: Felix Debrandicourt abt 1797 France Head Greenwich Kent Maria Jewitt abt 1821 Yorkshire, England Servant Greenwich Kent She is listed as single. I can't find a Waterhouse/Jewitt marriage. Perhaps Edward was illigitimate. It might be useful to have someone check the 1841 Yorkshire census to see if there is a Maria Jewitt or Maria Waterhouse b 1821 in Yorkshire. Rose

can i break it up a bit and try numbering people and see if that helps? Here's what's written: 'William Waterhouse the son of Joseph and Maria Waterhouse was born December 3 1836. Elizabeth Waterhouse the daughter of Joseph and Maria Waterhouse was born May 16 1840. Edward Waterhouse/Jewitt the son of Maria Jewitt was born December 8 1846. John Waterhouse the son of Joseph and Rachel Waterhouse was born March 16 1849. Joseph Waterhouse and Maria Kay was married June 4 1836 at Eastrington Church and she died on 22 October 1840 and buried in Eastrington Church yard. William Waterhouse the son of Joseph and Maria Waterhouse died 7 January 1841 and buried in Eastrington Church. Elizabeth Waterhouse died March 16 1841 and buried in Eastrington Churchyard. Joseph Waterhouse and Rachel Seaton were married February 13 1846 at Eastrington. William Waterhouse the son of Joseph and Rachel Waterhouse was born November 30 1852. Edwin Waterhouse the son of Joseph Waterhouse and Rachel Waterhouse was born October 2 1855. Elizabeth Waterhouse the daughter of Joseph and Rachel Waterhouse was born July 9 1860. John Waterhouse and Charlotte Dawson was married August 11 1884 at Hull.' The bits from 1846 onwards I'd already got but I can't get my head round the start - I'm assuming that Maria Kay is also referred to as Maria Waterhouse in the first few paragraphs but who is Maria Jewitt? Any pointers gratefully received!! Many thanks in advance. Vicki.
