Annette, You have most of the info you need to obtain the certificates. Just the Quarter is missing. Get your Visa card and go to: http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/ The information you have already I have just copied and pasted below and added a few notes. Albert Schofield Birth 1899 Qtr: (which Index did you find this in?) June - i checked! District: Bethnal Green Volume 1C Page 187 Dorothy Margaret Duncombe Birth 1900 Qtr: September (I looked it up!) Bethnal Green Volume 1C Page 127 That is all you need to order the two certs. Just one question for you. Are you sure that Albert is the right one, as there is another, Albert Alexander SCHOFIELD also registered in bethnal Green in the same Qtr. Pete

Hi Annette For the cost of two certificates it is well worth it. You can order the certificates online at the following address: www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificate/index.asp Once you get into the realm of 1841-1901 censuses it becomes much more of a web based research project but it all depends on how acturate you want to be and how much evidence you want to support each relationship. You can either just go on what the censuses tell you or order certificates to support the findings. Some people just get info from others on sites likes this and take it as being 100% and go with that. Each to their own. Good luck. Suzanne

Birth, marriage and death certs give information of use - to see what is included on certs and what it means, this site is invaluable: http://home.clara.net/dixons/Certificates/indexbd.htm From 1841-1901 you can use the 10-yearly censuses to track individual people & families. If you go to the homepage on this website and scroll down you will find a section called 'Getting Started' which you may find helpful to read. Although GR does have lots of useful info it likes to hide it, thus rendering it not as useful as it could be. nell

In a nutshell, yes, you have to get certs before you can safely move backwards. You could, just possibly, find the details of Baptisms, if you knew the area, but this could be a long and painful slog - much quicker and probably cheaper to get the certs. Olde Crone
